
A sell-out crowd Tuesday night for the University of Vermont’s men’s soccer team’s annual Peter Baldwin memorial game.Baldwin was a UVM soccer superstar, guiding his cats’ team to three straight Yankee Conference titles while becoming one of the school’s all-time leading scorers. A 1984 Hall of Fame inductee, Baldwin died in 2014 after a lengthy battle with illness.Ever since then, UVM’s men’s and women’s soccer teams hit the pitch in Baldwin’s name for one game each season.On Tuesday, team captain Nick Lockermann wore an armband during the game to represent Baldwin’s jersey #11 in his honor.”I think it’s really important for us to not only know where we’re going but where we’ve come from,” said head coach Rob Dow.It is a legacy that Dow says is carried on by this season’s roster.”Hard work, resiliency, and teamwork, things we’re just trying to be better at every single day,” said Dow.Dow says Baldwin’s love for the sport and for his team still echoes across Catamount Country, a decade after his passing.”To play in front of that meaningful environment,” said Dow. “We’re just so indebted.”The crowd was loud.”I always try to get in the front,” said sophomore Seamus Hernandez. “I’m screaming, I’m hollering. You can’t not have a good time, it’s infectious.”On Tuesday night, the UVM fans celebrated again with the team they have today, while remembering one of their all-time greats who helped pave the program’s path.”Just seeing all the old trophies and everything brings the school spirit up for the games for sure,” said Ian Funke with the UVM Men’s Soccer Fan Club.UVM beat Hofstra 2-1 to stay unbeaten on the season.The women’s team will also be having a memorial game for Peter Baldwin. That takes place Wednesday at 6 p.m.
