The Apple Bowl gave us a treat with an intense Section VII high school boys’ soccer match. The Class A New York State ranked No. 8 Peru high school Nighthawks were tested by a formidable Saranac high school squad from Class B, but in the end, it was Peru’s Seanen Edwards who scored on a game-winning goal in overtime to give his squad the 3-2 victory. “It was a battle, it was a dogfight, but we came out on top,” Edwards said. “We fought hard the whole game.” The Nighthawks set the tone early with a quick goal by Jordan Osborne off a through ball assist by Edwards to give Peru a 1-0 lead. The Spartans responded with a goal on a rebound chance by Nolan Hamel to even the score at 1-1 by the end of the first half. Theran Ducatte then tacked on another rebound chance in the second half to give Saranac a 2-1 lead. Despite the Spartans taking hold of a potential upset with the goal advance Peru refused to quit. “We faced adversity like these years and years with this group of guys,” Edwards said. “It just comes down to hard work in the end, and that’s really what happened. We just put in the work, and it showed.” A corner kick by Osborne gave Deacon Whitmarsh a wide-open net, which he drilled the game-tying goal, making the score at 2-2. The game-winner took two overtimes, but with 1:10 to go in the game, Edwards took the ball in open space, made a quick move to his right, and fired a shot in the back right of the net under the mitts of Saranac keeper Damien Lannon. Edwards then ran to several of his peers and classmates in the stands who were cheering loudly after his goal kept the Nighthawks undefeated at 5-0. “It was kind of a dream,” Edwards said. “My coaches were like ‘rip the shot!’ I knew the time was ticking down, but I just needed to rip it and hope for the best. Luckily, it went in.” See the highlights for this overtime thriller in the video above.
