University of Vermont women’s soccer kicked off America East play with a tight defensive battle at Virtue Field. Both Vermont and Bryant University combined for six shots on goal, but no balls could make it past each side’s keeper, leading to a 0-0 draw. “Getting a shutout is big for us, getting a point in conference is big for us,” said Vermont women’s soccer head coach Kristi Huizenga. “We’ll use that to propel us the rest of the week.”Kylee Carafoli picked up the shutout in the net with three saves as Vermont’s starting keeper. One of those saves included an impressive diving stop against Bryant’s Madison Luke in the first half. Huizenga was not only impressed with Carafoli but also with the play of her entire defensive line, which she says has been consistent all season. “All year our backs have been showing up,” Huizenga said. “With the amount of work rate and discipline and execution that we’re asking the rest of the team to do defensively … And I thought the team really matched their efforts today.”Vermont kicks off against New Hampshire University for their next game, a game Huizenga is pumped for, the twin state matchup between the two America East schools. “It’s always a rivalry game,” Huizenga said. “We’re excited to be home, we’re excited to have a new team this year and for them to have a new team … we’ll be prepping for it all week.”Kickoff for this contest is on Sunday, Sep. 28, at 1:00 pm.
