A battle between two NCAA Division III colleges from each side of Lake Champlain was dominated by one school from the North Country. Plattsburgh State University and Norwich University met on the women’s volleyball court, where it was the road squad, Plattsburgh, who came out on top in a dominant three-set sweep. “It was really intimidating coming in here,” said Plattsburgh junior outside hitter Iris Mulvey. “But being able to know that we’re able to hold our own and be dominant even when we’re not on our own home court. It gives us our own confidence.”The Cardinals picked up their fourth win of the season and got better as the match went on. Plattsburgh won the first set against Norwich 25-16, their second set 25-14, and their third set 25-8. Plattsburgh credits staying on the same page as a team in all facets of the game as key to gradual improvement in the win. “Really capitalizing on our communication on and off the court,” Mulvey said. “Whether you make a mistake, you’re talking about it with the person next you or talking serve receive, talking about where the ball is going … just letting everyone know what’s going on.”Mulvey led the Cardinals with a team-high 8 kills and tied Bridget Ryan for a team-high 5 service aces, leading to 13.5 points for her team’s offense. Kyleigh Ganz also added seven kills in the win, while Darby Collyear finished with five kills. On defense, Ryan also tallied 19 digs for the Cardinals. The Cadet offense was led by Bella Ray Belldina, who finished with six kills. Cameryn Jenkins and Grace Davie also chipped in with 2 kills and 1 kill, respectively. Plattsburgh will return back home to face Paul Smith’s College and Vermont State University, Johnson, for a Memorial Hall tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 27. Norwich will look to bounce back against the University of Saint Joseph on Saturday, Sept. 27, at noon. See the highlights for this match in the video above, voiced by NBC5’s Jack Main.
