The University of Vermont men’s soccer team continued its unbeaten streak, taking down the same team that gave the Catamounts their last loss in October 2024. The Catamounts opened America East play with a 2-0 shutout against the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Retrievers. This puts Vermont at 7-0-3 overall and 1-0-0 in their conference. “This was a must-win game and we had to get this one,” said Vermont junior midfielder Andrew Millar. “This was the last team we lost to in recent history, so it feels really good to get the first win in the conference.”Vermont was unable to score in the first half but kept its heavy attack pressure up all afternoon, outshooting UMBC 16-7. That led to their two second-half goals. The first was scored by Ludvig af Ugglas after he scored with his head off a rebound chance from a Vermont corner kick. The second came on a well-timed pass from Millar, who placed Ryan Zellefrow right in front of the box for his team’s second goal. Zellefrow scored his third goal in the past two games for UVM. Vermont men’s soccer head coach Rob Dow said Zellefrow was able to take advantage of a UMBC defensive formation, allowing him to give his squad a bit of insurance with his goal in the second half. “They play with five defenders,” Dow said. “We really had to have these blind runs going through, and that’s what Zellefrow has been providing — scoring these goals on shoulder runs.”Niklas Herceg picked up his fourth shutout of the season for Vermont, a performance Dow says is typical for his starting goalie.”That’s because he’s our guy,” Dow said. “He steps up in big moments, defending these crosses coming up in traffic, he takes on a lot of big bodies, but he’s brave, takes the edge out of their attack.”The Catamounts are now prepared to take on the rest of the America East after a strong start to their conference play in 2025. “We’re not going to drop our level of play just because it’s conference play now,” Millar said. “We’re going to keep improving. We’ve had a good start to the season and conference play is going to be no different. We’re going to keep the foot on the gas.”Vermont will start a two-game road trip on Saturday, Oct. 4, against another America East conference foe, New Jersey Institute of Technology. Kickoff for that contest is at 6 p.m.
