Burlington City Council approves ordinance 9-2 Monday night, nude participation during special events like the ‘Naked Bike Ride’ exempt from legal punishment
On Monday night, Burlington City Council voted to approve an ordinance that would make indecent exposure in public spaces illegal. The vote was 9-2.Up until this point, public nudity has technically been allowed in Burlington.There have been multiple instances of people walking naked through the streets of Burlington over the years, particularly during the summer months.Several downtown businesses recently voiced their disdain for those who choose to be nude in Burlington, saying it is bad for businesses during the busy summer tourism season. Residents have also complained. Those complaints prompted city councilors to take action and consider the change.Council members who were not on board with the ordinance were worried what passing it would mean for some beloved traditions, like the Burlington Naked Bike Ride.
