Local leaders vote to replace Cape Air flights in Saranac Lake
If approved, Cape Air’s flights to New York and Boston would be replaced with a SkyWest service to Detroit.
The Adirondack Regional Airport in Saranac Lake could lose two Cape Air flights to New York and Boston. Local leaders in Harrietstown voted last week to recommend a change to the airport’s essential air service, a federal program that provides subsidies to small, rural airports. The town board received four bids from Cape Air, Contour Airlines, SkyWest Airlines, and Boutique Air. At an Oct. 9 meeting, the board voted 3-2 in favor of a bid from SkyWest with nonstop service to Detroit, according to town supervisor Jordanna Mallach. Mallach told NBC5 that SkyWest offered flights to Detroit and Washington, D.C. The board ultimately decided on Detroit because airports in Plattsburgh and Ogdensburg already offered service to Washington, D.C. According to Mallach, the board favored SkyWest because it would provide larger jets, allowing passengers to pack larger items, like bicycles and skis. The decision is not final. The town board has submitted the recommendation in a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation, which will have the final say. It’s unclear when that decision could be made, due to the federal government shutdown.
