
A Vermont man has been charged after police said he caused a crash that seriously injured a woman.On Oct. 7, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department responded to a crash on Hibbard Road in Georgia. Investigators learned that the driver, Jeffrey Chalmers, 44, crashed into a tree on the side of the road.Police said they later learned that Chalmers was using his cellphone before the crash. When he ended the call, he allegedly threw the device and began speeding, causing the vehicle to fishtail and crash.A female passenger in the vehicle was seriously injured in the crash, and suffered a broken back, among other injuries. She was taken first to Northwest Medical Center in St. Albans before being transferred to the University of Vermont Medical Center.Chalmers was taken to Northwest Medical Center for treatment and then lodged at Northwest State Correctional Facility on an unrelated warrant.He was later charged with grossly negligent operation with serious bodily injury for the crash. The Sheriff’s Department is currently seeking a warrant for his arrest on the new charge.
