For the first time in nearly 50 years, the famed “Miracle on Ice” returned to the Herb Brooks Arena, albeit in an exciting new way — with holograms. The one-of-a-kind event happened on the same ice where the historic game took place in 1980, using state-of-the-art hologram technology.Beermaker Michelob Ultra was responsible for bringing one of the greatest sporting events ever to take place on American soil back to Lake Placid on Thursday. The event was specifically catered to bring fans back to the place where it all began.”Many, many months of planning went into this because this, this moment is unique,” said Ricardo Marques with Michelob Ultra. “It’s special. And we were very self-aware that bringing fans to Lake Placid, bringing the legends series, to have to be unique.”Two thousand lucky fans got to witness a holographic recreation of the famous medal round game between the powerhouse Soviet Union squad and Team USA, the outcome of which changed not only American hockey but world politics. The game is most notable because in the winter of 1980, America’s victory was enough to bolster the spirits of a nation beleaguered by the Iran hostage crisis, widespread economic turmoil, and the ever presence of the Cold War.Legends from the American team, including goalie Jim Craig, were back on the ice, along with Center Mark Johnson and Captain Mike Eruzuonie. The trio made the trip back to the building they made famous to watch the presentation, which was narrated by Al Michaels, the voice of the Miracle.”I find it extremely enjoyable just from the standpoint that, so long ago, obviously we did something special, but even coming back at our ages, we’re a little bit more gray than we were back then, it just brings back memories,” said Johnson. “It just makes you feel good.”There was hardly a dry eye in the arena when the famous words “Do you believe in miracles?” played over the loudspeaker.”It’s such a full circle moment for me to be able to know that I went to the game with my dad, and now, my son works for ORDA, he works in the arena, that this game happened then, and him and I are going to sit together and watch this,” said Joey Reome, who attended the event. “I expect some tears to flow tonight and some memories, and it’s going to be special.”The event will be streamed on Peacock at a later date.
