9 injured in Cincinnati mass shooting at music festival
GOOD AFTERNOON. CITY LEADERS ARE PREPARING TO TALK AFTER A MASS SHOOTING AT A MUSIC VENUE OVERNIGHT, INJURING NINE PEOPLE. WE KNOW ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WAS IN CRITICAL CONDITION. CITY LEADERS TALKING TO US FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME SINCE THAT MASS SHOOTING. LET’S LISTEN IN. AT AN ESTABLISHMENT IN THE EAST END WITH NINE CONFIRMED VICTIMS. THESE VICTIMS HAVE BEEN TREATED AT TWO AREA HOSPITALS, AND AT PRESENT THERE ARE NO FATALITIES. YOU WILL HEAR IN A MOMENT FROM CITY MANAGER SHERYL LONG AND INTERIM CHIEF ADAM HENRY TO DISCUSS THE CURRENT STATUS OF THE INVESTIGATION. BEFORE THEY COME UP TO SPEAK, I WOULD LIKE TO EMPHASIZE A COUPLE OF THINGS. FIRST AND FOREMOST, OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT AND OUR FIRST RESPONDERS ARE HEROES. THAT IS TRUE FOR THE OFFICERS WHO ARE ON SITE AS OFF DUTY DETAIL. FOR THOSE WHO RESPONDED TO THE SCENE TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF EVERYONE NEARBY. FOR THOSE WHO ARE WORKING NONSTOP OVERNIGHT THROUGH THE MORNING UP UNTIL RIGHT NOW TO DELIVER JUSTICE, AS WELL AS ALL THE MEDICAL STAFF WHO WORKED TO SAVE LIVES. SECOND, THIS IS A DARK MOMENT FOR OUR COMMUNITY. IT’S HORRIFIC. IT’S UNCONSCIONABLE, AND I UNDERSTAND THE FEAR AND THE TRAUMA THAT SO MANY IN OUR COMMUNITY ARE EXPERIENCING RIGHT NOW. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT A LARGE, OPEN CROWD EXPECTING TO ENJOY THEIR NIGHT PEACEFULLY AND INSTEAD AN UNIMAGINABLE TRAGEDY OCCURS DUE TO SENSELESS GUN VIOLENCE. THIS IS NOT AND CANNOT BE ACCEPTABLE. OUR POLICE AND OUR PARTNERS HAVE A JOB TO DO AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. THEY AND OUR CITY LEADERS UNDERSTAND THE RESPONSIBILITY THAT WE HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING IT TAKES TO ENSURE THAT THERE IS JUSTICE TO BE PRESENT IN THE COMMUNITY AND TO MAKE SURE THE RESOURCES AND TACTICS ARE THERE TO PROTECT OUR RESIDENTS. AND WE ARE ALSO COMMITTED TO PROVIDING UPDATES TO ALL OF YOU AS WE GET MORE INFORMATION. OUR ENTIRE CITY’S HEARTS AND FOCUS ARE WITH THE VICTIMS AND THEIR LOVED ONES DURING THEIR RECOVERY. THIS IS A CHALLENGING DAY FOR OUR COMMUNITY, A CHALLENGING DAY FOR THE REGION. BUT TOGETHER WE WILL CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AND CONTINUE TO HOLD THESE VIOLENT AGGRESSORS ACCOUNTABLE. I’LL NOW BRING UP CITY MANAGER SHERYL LONG. LIKE ALL OF US, I’M HEARTBROKEN TO WITNESS SUCH A SENSELESS ACT OF VIOLENCE. BUT UNFORTUNATELY, I AM NOT SHOCKED. SO MANY OF US IN AMERICA ARE IN A SIMILAR STATE OF UNEASE, NOT WONDERING IF A SHOOTING LIKE THIS WILL OCCUR, BUT WHEN THE STRESS, THE EXHAUSTION, THE CONFUSION, THE ARE CONSTANT. THAT MOMENT WHEN YOUR HEART DROPS BECAUSE IT’S HAPPENING AGAIN IS SOMETHING WE’RE ALL TERRIFYINGLY USED TO BY NOW. I CAN ONLY THANK GOD THAT NO ONE WAS KILLED, OR SINCE I POLICE OFFICERS, FIRE AND EMS AND ALL OTHER FIRST RESPONDERS WHO RUSHED TO THE SCENE ARE HEROES OF THE HIGHEST ORDER TIME AND TIME AGAIN. THEY RUN TOWARDS CHAOTIC AND DANGEROUS SITUATIONS LIKE THIS TO PROTECT US. THEIR WORK SAVED LIVES LAST NIGHT AND IS ULTIMATE ACT OF PUBLIC SERVICE. THANK YOU. INTERIM CHIEF HENRY HENRY CHIEF FRANK MCKINLEY. AND THANK YOU TO EVERY SINGLE CPD OFFICER AND FIRE STAFF WHO JUMPED INTO WITHOUT HESITATION INTO THIS UNTHINKABLE CASE. OUR OFFICERS ARE WORKING AT TOP SPEED TO UNDERSTAND THE FACTS, INTERVIEW WITNESSES AND VICTIMS, AND PIECE TOGETHER THE CRUCIAL ELEMENTS OF THIS INVESTIGATION. WHEN THAT WORK IS COMPLETE, THEY WILL MOVE JUST AS QUICKLY TO BRING ANY AND ALL. PERPETUATORS TO JUSTICE. THAT IS WHAT CPD DOES. THEY DO IT NO MATTER THE CIRCUMSTANCE. THEY DO IT USING EVERY INNOVATIVE AND PROBLEM SOLVING RESOURCE AT THEIR DISPOSAL, AND THEY DO IT WITH THE FULL SUPPORT OF ME AND THE CITY ADMINISTRATION. UNFORTUNATELY, RIGHT NOW THEY ARE DOING IT ON VERY LITTLE SLEEP AND I’M VERY GRATEFUL FOR THEM. WE ARE VERY LIMITED ON CONFIRMED INFORMATION RIGHT NOW, BUT ONE THING IS ABSOLUTELY CLEAR THERE IS NO NEED FOR A DEADLY FIREARM TO BE CROWDED INTO INTO A MUSIC VENUE LATE AT NIGHT. I WANT TO REITERATE WHAT I’VE SAID TIME AND TIME AGAIN. IF YOU HAVE A GUN, YOUR TOP PRIORITY NEEDS TO BE RESPONSIBLE OWNERSHIP. ANYTHING LESS IS ACTIVELY PUTTING OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY IN DANGER. A RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNER WOULD BE AS APPALLED AS WE ARE TO HEAR OF LAST NIGHT’S BRAZEN VIOLENCE. A RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNER UNDERSTANDS THAT DEADLY WEAPONS HAVE NO PLACE IN LARGE CROWDS, AND THAT ENTERTAINMENT VENUES. RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNER LOOKS AT SITUATIONS LIKE THIS AND IS AS FURIOUS AS WE ARE, BECAUSE WORD GETS AROUND. PEOPLE KNOW WHO IS DANGEROUS, PEOPLE KNOW WHO HAS A GUN AND SHOULDN’T. RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERS ARE NOT RUNNING TO CIRCLES THAT WOULD FIRE IN A CROWD OF PEOPLE. IF YOU OWN A GUN, WE NEED THIS RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNER OWNER TO BE YOU. IF YOU CANNOT COMPLY WITH THESE SIMPLE RULES, YOU ARE. YOU ARE COMPLICIT IN THE VIOLENCE. PERIOD. WHEN FIREARMS GET INTO THE WRONG HANDS AND WHEN GUN OWNERS ARE LAX WITH PROTOCOLS THAT STAND BETWEEN US AND DEADLY CHAOS, THAT’S WHEN THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENS. THERE IS NO EXCUSE. GUNS ARE GASOLINE TO THE FLAMES OF VIOLENCE. THEY AMPLIFY THE DESTRUCTION AND OVERRULE ANY SENSE OF RESOLUTION. GUN OWNERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KEEPING THEIR DANGEROUS WEAPONS FAR AWAY FROM PEOPLE AND VENUES WHERE THEY HAVE NO PLACE. PLEASE HELP US PREVENT MORE SENSELESS VIOLENCE. STAND WITH US AND SAY THAT THIS CARELESS TREATMENT OF HUMAN LIFE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE IN OUR CITY. NEVER HAS BEEN, NEVER WILL BE. JOIN US TO PROTECT. PROTECT OUR NEIGHBORS, OUR FAMILIES, AND OUR FELLOW CINCINNATI REDS. I ALSO WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THE CITY INVEST IN HELPING FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS NAVIGATE GUN VIOLENCE. THE LIKE THE INCREDIBLE WORK OF CPD’S VICTIM ASSISTANCE LIAISON UNIT, LED BY KAREN RUMSEY AND HER TEAM, ARE THE ONES WHO STEP UP AND HELP WHEN EVERYTHING FEELS LIKE IT’S FALLING APART. THEY HELP VICTIMS AND FAMILIES AND THEIR COMMUNITIES MAKE SENSE OF VIOLENT ACTS, AS WELL AS OTHER CRUCIAL SUPPORT FOR OFTEN DIFFICULT DAY TO DAY PROCEDURES THAT VICTIMS NEVER ANTICIPATE NEEDING TO DEAL WITH. I AM ALSO GRATEFUL TO THE HOPE AND SHIELD NETWORK AT UC HEALTH IN CINCINNATI CHILDREN’S, WHICH. ACTIVATES TO PROVIDE VICTIMS OF GUN VIOLENCE WHO ADMITTED TO CARE A STANDARD COMPONENT OF THE INCREDIBLE. I AM CONFIDENT THAT WE WILL SEE JUSTICE SWIFTLY SERVED IN THIS CASE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE RESOURCES WE HAVE ARE MADE EVEN STRONGER BY THE SUPPORT OF PEOPLE WHO KNOW SOMETHING WE DON’T. IF YOU HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS CRIME, IF SOMETHING ABOUT THIS IS SOUNDING AN ALARM ABOUT SOMEONE YOU KNOW, PLEASE DO THE RESPONSIBLE THING AND TALK TO THE POLICE. WE CANNOT BE SAFE IF WE PROTECT THE PEOPLE WHO HARM US. AGAIN, I THANK GOD THAT NO ONE WAS KILLED IN LAST NIGHT’S SHOOTING, AND I’M ETERNALLY GRATEFUL TO THE FIRST RESPONDERS WHO PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE TO PROTECT OUR CITY. THANK YOU. AND NOW WE WILL HAVE CHIEF INTERIM CHIEF PENNY. GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE. LIKE THE MAYOR AND CITY MANAGER SAID. FIRST OFF, I AM SO THANKFUL THAT NO ONE LOST THEIR LIVES DURING THIS HORRIFIC EVENT. EARLY THIS MORNING. THIS IS A TRAGEDY THAT IS GOING TO BE INVESTIGATED TO OUR FULLEST ABILITIES. AND I’M VERY CONFIDENT WE’RE GOING TO FIND THOSE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE AND BRING THEM TO JUSTICE. SECONDLY, ONCE AGAIN, FOR THOSE OFFICERS AND THOSE FIREFIGHTERS THAT RESPONDED TO THIS INCIDENT, I NEED YOU TO THINK ABOUT, YOU KNOW, ONE MOMENT THERE YOU ARE DOING YOUR JOB AND YOU’RE HAVING AN EVENT THAT IS EXTREMELY PEACEFUL, JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHER EVENTS THAT HAPPENED IN OUR CITY THAT ARE EXTREMELY PEACEFUL. AND THEN IN A BLINK OF AN EYE, WE’RE HAVING SOMETHING AT THIS LEVEL, A CRITICAL INCIDENT AT THIS LEVEL THAT YOU HAVE TO IMMEDIATELY RESPOND TO AND FALL BACK ON YOUR TRAINING, AND IT JUST SHOWS YOU HOW GREAT OUR FIRST RESPONDERS ARE IN THIS CITY. POLICE AND FIRE OUR MEDICS. EVERYONE THAT’S INVOLVED IN THIS, BECAUSE IMMEDIATELY ALL OF THERE. AND I’M CONFIDENT IT’S BECAUSE OF THEIR RAPID RESPONSE AND THEIR DEDICATION TO DUTY THAT NO ONE LOST THEIR LIFE THIS MORNING. AND FINALLY, BEFORE I GET INTO SOME OF THE SPECIFICS OF WHAT OCCURRED, PLEASE UNDERSTAND, LIKE THE MAYOR AND THE CITY MANAGER SAID, THIS IS A VERY COMPLEX INVESTIGATION. I NEED TO ENSURE THAT I KEEP THE IN ORDER TO MAKE SURE THAT WE BRING THESE INDIVIDUALS IN CUSTODY AND HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE. SO I’M GOING TO BE VERY LIMITED, EXTREMELY LIMITED. AND THE QUESTIONS I’M GOING TO BE ABLE TO ANSWER TODAY, BUT AS YOU’RE AWARE, AROUND 1 A.M. SHOTS RANG OUT INSIDE OF 4343 KELLOGG AVENUE, I BELIEVE IT’S RIVERVIEW LIVE OR RIVERVIEW. RIVERVIEW LIVE NIGHTCLUB. THERE WAS ABOUT 5 OR 600 INDIVIDUALS THERE. EVERYTHING WAS PEACEFUL AT THAT MOMENT. LEADING UP TO THAT. WE HAD DETAIL OFFICERS THAT WERE WORKING THE PARKING LOT AND THE PERIMETER LIKE WE NORMALLY DO FOR ANY TYPE OF LIQUOR ESTABLISHMENTS. ONCE THOSE SHOTS WERE FIRED, IMMEDIATE RESOURCES THROUGHOUT THE CITY WERE BROUGHT IN. RESOURCES THAT WEREN’T EVEN WORKING WERE BROUGHT IN. TYPICALLY, SHOOTINGS ARE INVESTIGATED AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL, BUT DUE TO THE COMPLEXITY OF THIS INVESTIGATION, THE SIZE OF THE CRIME SCENE INSIDE THE AMOUNT OF VICTIMS WE ORDERED THAT OUR CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION SECTION COME IN WITH THEIR CRIMINALISTS TO PROCESS THIS CRIME SCENE AND CONDUCT THE INTERVIEWS WE CURRENTLY HAVE NINE NINE VICTIMS WHO HAVE NON-LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. WE ARE STILL PROCESSING THE SCENE. WE ARE STILL INTERVIEWING THE VICTIMS. WE ARE STILL INTERVIEWING WITNESSES. AND LIKE I STATED EARLIER BEFORE, WE ARE GOING TO BRING WHATEVER RESOURCES WE CAN IN WHATEVER WE NEED TO DO TO FIND OUT WHO OR PERSONS WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS INCIDENT. I REALLY DO NOT HAVE ANY MORE THAT I CAN PROVIDE YOU AT THIS TO FIELD QUESTIONS. CAN YOU TELL US ANY SORT OF SUSPECT THAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR OR SUSPECTS? I CANNOT AT THIS TIME, MA’AM. RECOVERED ANY WEAPONS. I CANNOT GIVE ANY OF THAT INVESTIGATION. ARE THERE ANY HISTORY OF INCIDENTS LIKE THIS AT THAT VENUE OR ANYTHING CLOSE TO IT? NO, THERE IS NOT INDIVIDUALS IN CUSTODY. SO THAT’S TO SAY THERE WERE TWO GUNMAN IN THIS INCIDENT. I NEVER SAID IF THERE WAS ONE OR MORE. WE ARE INVESTIGATING THAT. WHAT WERE THE SECURITY MEASURES INSIDE? WE’RE TALKING ABOUT METAL DETECTORS. I MEAN, FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN, FOR A GUN TO GET INSIDE OF THIS IS STILL PART OF OF WHAT WE ARE INVESTIGATING, BECAUSE WE NEED TO FIND OUT HOW, HOW MANY, WHATEVER AMOUNT OF GUNS THAT WERE BROUGHT INTO THIS PLACE. S█O THATISSTILL SOMETHING THAT WE ARE INVESTIGATING. BUT I CAN’T RELEASE THAT EITHER AT THIS TIME. CHIEF, DO YOU KNOW WHAT KIND OF WEAPON, WHAT KIND OF FIREARM WAS USED? I CANNOT RELEASE THAT AT THIS TIME, SIR. THERE’S BEEN MULTIPLE HIGH PROFILE SHOOTINGS LATELY. HAS IT BEEN SINCE SEVEN PEOPLE WERE SHOT IN NOVEMBER? THE SPOTLIGHT LOUNGE. NOW YOU HAVE ANOTHER HIGH PROFILE SHOOTING. IS THERE ANYTHING THAT’S CONNECTED WITH THESE BYSTANDERS GETTING HURT IN THESE INCIDENTS OR ANYTHING THAT’S LEADING TO THIS SITUATION HAPPENING? WHAT I CAN TELL YOU IS I AM VERY PROUD OF HOW OUR OFFICERS RESPOND TO THESE SITUATIONS AND HOW WE INVESTIGATE THESE INCIDENCES, AND WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE ALL THE RESOURCES THAT THE CITY MANAGER MAYOR PROVIDES THE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO HOLD THESE PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE. PIGGYBACKING ON THAT QUESTION, THIS MIGHT BE A QUESTION FOR THE MAYOR, BUT YEAH, YOU HAD INCIDENTS AT CLUB SEVEN. PEOPLE SHOT THREE WEEKS BACK IN LATE NOVEMBER. WE’VE HAD SEVERAL HIGH PROFILE INCIDENTS. INVESTIGATION FOR FOLLOWING SOME OF THAT. AND NOW YOU HAVE ONE OF THE LARGEST MASS SHOOTING INCIDENTS, ACCORDING TO COUNCILWOMAN OWENS IN HER STATEMENT TODAY IN CINCINNATI’S HISTORY. SO WHAT IS YOUR PLAN TO REDUCE VIOLENCE AND CRIME? IS THAT A QUESTION YOU WANTED TO ANSWER? YOU WANT ME TO, SIR? I’M HAPPY TO TAKE IT. THE HIGH PROFILE INCIDENTS THAT YOU MENTIONED ARE ABSOLUTELY TRAGIC AND MUST BE STOPPED. THE THROUGH LINE BETWEEN A LOT OF THOSE INSTANCES THAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT. AND WE’LL LEAVE THIS MOST RECENT SHOOTING ASIDE BECAUSE, AGAIN, IT’S BEING INVESTIGATED AND I CAN’T COMMENT ON THE SPECIFICS, BUT THE THROUGH LINE FOR THOSE PREVIOUS SHOOTINGS WERE PEOPLE GETTING INTO AN ARGUMENT, HAVING READY ACCESS TO GUNS AND THEN SHOOTING INDISCRIMINATELY. SO YOU ASK WHAT, IF ANYTHING, CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT? WELL, WE CAN CONTINUE TO HAVE OFF DUTY DETAILS AT THESE ESTABLISHMENTS AS WE HAVE BOTH THIS ESTABLISHMENT FROM THE SHOOTING THIS MORNING AND ALSO IN THE PREVIOUS. WE CAN CONTINUE TO DO HIGH VISIBILITY. WE CAN CONTINUE TO PARTNER WITH THE HIGHWAY PATROL TO CRACK DOWN ON ILLEGAL GUNS, AS WELL AS OUR PARTNERSHIPS WITH DOJ, ATF AND FBI. BUT IF PEOPLE HAVE EASY ACCESS TO GUNS ACROSS THE BOARD, ACROSS THE BOARD, AND IF THEY GET INTO ARGUMENTS AND INSTEAD OF DEALING WITH THOSE ARGUMENTS IN WAYS SHORT OF MORTAL DEATH, IT’S VERY, VERY DIFFICULT TO STOP THAT FROM HAPPENING. THIS BRINGS UP THE REAL CONVERSATION AROUND WHETHER OR NOT IT IS TOO EASY TO GET A GUN IN OUR COMMUNITY, WHETHER OR NOT OUR LAWS MAKE IT SO EASY TO GET A GUN IN OUR COMMUNITY THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE GUNS, COUPLED WITH THE FACT THAT THEY REFUSE TO DEAL WITH DISAGREEMENTS PEACEFULLY TO THE EXTENT THAT THEY NOT ONLY REFUSE TO DEAL WITH DISAGREEMENTS PEACEFULLY, BUT THEY IMMEDIATELY RUN TO. MORTAL DANGER. AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT LEADERS, OUR CITY LEADERS ARE VERY, VERY FOCUSED ON WHAT WE CAN DO TO PREVENT PEOPLE FROM GETTING ACCESS TO GUNS, HOLDING PEOPLE ACCOUNTABLE WHO ENGAGE IN THIS KIND OF VIOLENCE. BUT IT IS A VERY CHALLENGING ISSUE TO SOLVE. ANY OF THEM, ANY OF THEM BEING LOOKED AT AS SUSPECTS AT ALL? ONCE AGAIN, AS I STATED BEFORE, I CANNOT RELEASE ANY MORE INVESTIGATION. AND JUST TO GET CLARITY ON ONE MORE THING, UC HEALTH SAID THAT THEY HAD ONE PERSON IN CRITICAL CONDITION OF WHAT YOU SAID. NINE PEOPLE WERE FACING NON-LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE CLARIFICATION ON YEAH, THEY ARE IN STABLE. EVERYONE IS IN STABLE CONDITION. THANK YOU. GOOD QUESTION. WELL, THERE YOU HAVE IT. CITY LEADERS RESPONDING FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME SINCE THAT MASS SHOOTING AT RIVERFRONT LIVE THERE IN THE EAST END. WE LEARNED SOME NEW DETAILS, SOME OF THAT BEING THAT ALL NINE PEOPLE HAVE NON-LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. THAT IS THE GOOD NEWS HERE. AND NO FATALITIES. NOW, WE HEARD FROM MAYOR AFTAB PUREVAL FIRST, AND THE FIRST THING HE SAID WAS A THANK YOU TO OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT CALLING THEM HEROES, SAYING THAT THEY WERE VERY QUICK TO RESPOND. AND THAT WAS PART OF THE OUTCOME THAT WE SAW HERE. THIS IS A DARK MOMENT FOR OUR COMMUNITY. OF COURSE, HIGHLIGHTING SOME OF THE STRING OF VIOLENT INCIDENTS WE’VE SEEN OVER JUST THE LAST FEW WEEKS. OF COURSE, AS TEMPERATURES HAVE GOTTEN WARMER. HE SPOKE DIRECTLY TO THAT POINT, SAYING THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. THEN WE HEARD FROM CITY MANAGER SHERYL LONG. SHE, YOU COULD TELL, WAS VERY FRUSTRATED WHEN SHE SPOKE, SAYING THAT SHE WASN’T SHOCKED BY WHAT’S GOING ON. SHE SAID FOR SOME CITIES, IT’S NOT A MATTER OF IF VIOLENCE WILL OCCUR, IT’S A MATTER OF WHEN. SO SHE SPENT A GREAT DEAL OF TIME THINKING FIRST RESPONDERS AS WELL. AND SHE ALSO SPOKE TO THE RESPONSIBILITY OF GUN OWNERS, SPENDING SEVERAL MINUTES TALKING ABOUT RESPONSIBLE GUN OWNERSHIP, WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE, AND SAYING. PART OF THE PROBLEM WE’RE SEEING IS THAT THOSE WITH GUNS ARE NOT BEING RESPONSIBLE. THEY’RE CHOOSING TO USE THOSE TO SETTLE ARGUMENTS AND SAYING THAT SHE WAS VERY FRUSTRATED WITH THAT. SHE ALSO HAD A SENSE OF HOPE, TOO, SAYING, QUOTE, SHE IS VERY CONFIDENT THAT JUSTICE WILL BE SWIFT NOW. WE THEN HEARD FROM INTERIM CHIEF ADAM HANEY. HE SAID, THIS IS A VERY COMPLEX INVESTIGATION, NOT GIVING US A LOT OF INFORMATION. WE DO NOT HAVE ANY SUSPECT INFORMATION. WE ALSO WERE NOT TOLD IF GUNS WERE RECOVERED FROM THIS SITUATION. ALSO NOT SAYING MUCH ABOUT THE NUMBER OF SUSPECTS. NOW, THERE WAS A VERY POIGNANT MOMENT THERE WHERE MAYOR AFTAB PUREVAL WAS ASKED, WHAT HAPPENS NOW? WHAT IS THE RESPONSE TO SOME OF THE VIOLENCE THAT WE’VE SEEN? I WANT TO BRING IN MY CO-ANCHOR, ERIN THOMAS, WHO JOINS US FROM INSIDE THAT PRESS CONFERENCE. ERIN, A REALLY POWERFUL ANSWER THERE. HE EXPLAINED. KIND OF THE COMPLEX ISSUES SURROUNDING THIS STRING OF VIOLENCE. WHAT DID HE HAVE TO SAY ABOUT HIS PLAN MOVING FORWARD? AFTER WHAT WE SAW LAST NIGHT? YEAH, FROM WHAT WE RECALL HERE, LINDSAY, THE MAYOR, HE WAS SAYING HOW PERHAPS IT DOES HELP TO HAVE SOME OF THESE OFF DUTY OR OFF DUTY OFFICERS PROVIDE EXTRA SECURITY AT SOME OF THESE VENUES. AND WE ACTUALLY HEARD FROM THE INTERIM POLICE CHIEF HERE SAYING THAT THERE WERE ACTUALLY SOME OFFICERS THAT WERE PERFORMING SOME SECURITY CHECKS AT THE PARKING LOT, THE PERIMETER. AND JUST SO HAPPENED ONCE THE SHOTS RANG OUT, YOU HAD SEVERAL OF THEM THAT WERE ALREADY IN POSITION, BUT THEN THEY STARTED TO CALL IN MORE BACKUP. BUT BECAUSE OF THE MAGNITUDE OF THIS SHOOTING AND THE AMOUNT OF VICTIMS WE’RE TALKING ABOUT, THAT’S WHY THEY BROUGHT IN THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS UNIT. YOU DEFINITELY HEARD FROM MANY OF OUR CITY LEADERS. DEFINITELY JUST BEING THANKFUL THAT EVEN THOUGH THIS IS AN UNFORTUNATE SITUATION WITH NINE PEOPLE FACING INJURIES, THANKFULLY NO ONE LOST THEIR LIVES. BUT I’M PRETTY SURE I CAN ATTEST TO MANY OF US WHO WOKE UP THIS MORNING GETTING THAT PUSH ALERT ON THEIR PHONES, SEEING THE FIRST THING THIS MASS SHOOTING THAT HAPPENS OVERNIGHT, YOU KNOW, THE WEATHER IS GETTING WARMER. PEOPLE DO WANT TO ENJOY THEMSELVES. AND FOR SOMETHING LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN IS SIMPLY HEARTBREAKING. AND IT’S FRUSTRATING WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS I DID ASK. FIND OUT IF ANY OF THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SHOT, IF ANY OF THEM WERE BEING LOOKED AT AS SUSPECTS. AT THIS POINT, POLICE HAVE NOT ANSWERED THAT THEY HAVE NOT PROVIDED IF THEY HAVE A SUSPECT OR A DESCRIPTION OF ANY MORE SUSPECT, IF THERE’S ONE OR MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED. BUT CERTAINLY A LOT OF QUESTIONS THAT HAVE TO BE ASKED OTHER THAN THEM SAYING THAT THIS IS A RATHER COMPLEX INVESTIGATION THAT WE’LL BE FOLLOWING FOR A WHILE. LINSEY ERIN, A GREAT QUESTION. OBVIOUSLY BEING VERY TIGHT LIPPED ABOUT THIS. AND LIKE YOU SAID YOU WERE SHOCKED TO GET THIS ALERT. I KNOW MANY OF US AS WELL WILL FOLLOW UP WITH YOU IN JUST A LITTLE BIT. AGAIN A LOT OF QUESTIONS AT THIS POINT ABOUT WHAT IS TO COME WITH THIS SITUATION. WE’RE ALSO STARTING TO HEAR FROM SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO WERE INSIDE WHEN THIS HAPPENED. WE’VE RECEIVED A STATEMENT FROM THE DJ. WE’VE RECEIVED SEVERAL COMMENTS FROM THOSE WHO WERE INSIDE. THEY HAD TO RUN FOR THEIR LIVES. SO WE HAVE MUCH MORE INFORMATION TO GET TO YOU. OUR TEAM COVERAGE BEGINS AT 6:00 TONIGHT. WE HAVE SEVERAL REPORTERS ANCHORS ON THIS SITUATION. WE WIL

Here’s what we know:
Call for shots fired
The first call came in around 1 a.m. for a report of a shooting at Riverfront Live. Interim Chief Adam Hennie says multiple shots were fired inside the venue.
Hennie says multiple detailed officers were stationed in the parking lot of the venue, allowing Cincinnati police to quickly respond to the disturbance.
Multiple people injured
Hennie says roughly between 500-600 people were at the venue at the time shots rang out.
Police on the scene said nine people suffered gunshot wounds. Most were transported afterward to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, with no deaths reported.
A spokesperson from UC Health told sister station WLWT on Sunday that they received eight patients in total from the shooting: six have been treated and released, and two remain in stable condition.
One additional victim was transported from the scene to Good Samaritan Hospital.
Search for the shooter
Police have said that no suspect or suspects have been apprehended yet in the case. No suspect information or details on what may have led up to the shooting have so far been released by police.
In the hours after the shooting, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) confirmed in a statement that they are assisting Cincinnati police in their investigation of the incident. The department says that they are “deploying all resources to identify those responsible and seek justice for the victims.”
Kellogg Avenue was shut down for several hours throughout the morning while officers investigated the scene. It has since reopened.
Hennie says investigators are still continuing to interview both witnesses and victims alike.
Witnesses speak out
Tyra Moore, who was present at Riverfront Live when the shooting broke out, recounted what the scene was like at the venue.
“About time I think the first three shots went off, it was a quick pause. Everything stopped, it was like everybody froze,” recalled Moore. “Immediately, everybody started screaming and running. So you know, you want to get down and back off and run or get low or get out of harm’s way — but you don’t know where harm is coming from. The woman continued by saying that she heard at least 30 different rounds go off inside the venue.
Mayor, city manager condemn “senseless” shooting
Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval reacted to the news of the shooting on Sunday morning, releasing a statement on X.
“Overnight in the East End, our community was victim to a senseless mass shooting. Thank you to the officers on site, the first responders for their immediate action, and all the hospital staff who worked to save lives this morning. This is unconscionable. Our prayers are with all the victims, and Law Enforcement has our full support to deliver justice. We will continue to keep the public up to date.”
Pureval later spoke at the city press conference, calling it a “dark moment for our community.”
“We will continue to hold these violent aggressors accountable,” Pureval said.
City Manager Sheryl Long also spoke at the press conference, sharing she’s “heartbroken” but “not shocked.”
Long then proceeded to call upon gun owners to do their part in practicing proper gun safety techniques to help prevent incidents of violence such as this. Among other things, Long said that gun owners should never take their weapons inside crowded entertainment venues and have a duty to act with the safety of others in mind when out in public.
When asked about plans to reduce high-profile shooting incidents in the city, Pureval said the city will continue to station units at public venues and continue to lean on its state and federal partnerships to respond to violence and get illegal guns off the street.
However, Pureval also said incidents like this also bring up a “real conversation about whether or not it’s too easy to get a gun in our community.”
Over the past few years, Cincinnati has tried to enact a number of its own gun safety laws, most of which were later struck down in court. “It is a very challenging issue to solve,” Pureval added.
DJ releases statement
The management team for DJ Fresh, who says that he was performing at Riverfront Live when the shooting broke out, released a statement in the hours afterward responding to what happened.
“We are devastated by the horrific events that took place during the DJ Fresh Birthday Celebration. The statement went on to note that security operations are typically the sole responsibility of venue owners, and are not something that DJ Fresh or his management oversees.
DJ Fresh also released a brief statement of his own after the shooting, saying that he was “saddened” by what unfolded, and that he gave his “prayers and support” to those impacted.
