Plans for a Walmart Supercenter at the former Diamond Run Mall in Rutland are still in the early stages, with project permits waiting for approval.Plans are in progress to build a new supercenter in the town of Rutland. “They’re in the permitting process now,” said Tom Donahue, the city’s newly elected mayor. Demolition hasn’t started yet at the old Diamond Run Mall. In the meantime, community members are excited by the idea of a supercenter nearby. “A lot of us travel out of state to go to the Walmart supercenters, so it would be really helpful- save us, you know, hour, hour and a half on the weekend,” said Meredith Fabian, one local resident. Donahue is also looking forward to the addition. “People right now are actually leaving Rutland to do much of their shopping and we want to turn that around, and this is one of those vehicles that’ll get us there,” he said. The current downtown Rutland Walmart will close once the supercenter is open. Donahue said this may not happen until 2028. “It’s absolutely critical to fill that space with additional retail,” said Donahue. He explained that the decision to replace Walmart will ultimately be made by the plaza property owners, but the city is in communication with them about it. “They reached out to me actually just to talk about the potential for the space once it’s vacated,” Donahue said. Some community members already have an idea of what they want to see fill the space, highlighting the need for more local clothing stores. Another resident said she wants to see a movie theater fill the vacancy. “Rutland doesn’t have one. It would be a draw for anybody in several towns around,” said community member Pam Murphy.
