Man charged in Watertown bomb threats

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – A Watertown man has been charged with making a pair of bomb threats in Watertown last month.

Watertown city police say 30-year-old Michael Tweedy of 1030 Arsenal Street allegedly called in bomb threats at Planet Fitness and Skyline Apartments on June 25.

Several people were evacuated from both places for an extended period of time while bomb-detection dogs from Fort Drum searched the buildings. No bombs were found

Tweedy was arrested Thursday morning on two counts of making a terroristic threat.

As police escorted Tweedy into Watertown City Court for his arraignment, he said, “Praise be to God. I’m sorry.”

Tweedy was ordered held in the Jefferson County Jail on $5,000 bail or $25,000 bond.

A mental health evaluation was requested for Tweedy. Another hearing is set for next week.

According to court documents, Tweedy called Skyline Apartments to report a pipe bomb in the building “would detonate in an hour capable of causing mass casualties.”

City police said they were able to trace that call and the one to Planet Fitness to Tweedy’s cell phone.

In a statement, one police officer said Tweedy “denied access allowing police access to the swipe pattern of the phone to search it and stated that he would take his medication if we did not further investigate him.”
