Editor’s note: This report contains descriptions of alleged acts some may find disturbing. Court documents released Wednesday have provided additional details on the death of 22-year-old Emily Ferlazzo, the woman police said was killed while visiting Vermont for a wedding anniversary. Her husband, 41-year old Joseph Ferlazzo, was arraigned in Burlington, where he pleaded not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder. Joseph Ferlazzo previously told investigators he shot and killed his wife inside the couple’s camper bus last weekend. The admission conflicted with an initial account he shared with Emily Ferlazzo’s family that she had left the vehicle during an argument and disappeared. He is currently being held without bail, with a judge citing the “great weight of evidence” provided by police. Many of those details became public Wednesday once the affidavit was submitted in court. According to the affidavit, the couple drove from New Hampshire to Bolton on Oct. 15 to celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary. Investigators added in a separate interview that both of them had previously lived in Vermont and had ties to the area, but declined to provide additional details. The couple reportedly began arguing during the evening. Emily Ferlazzo began punching and kicking her husband during the argument, according to his admission outlined in court documents. Once she laid down on the bed, Joseph Ferlazzo told investigators he waited five to 10 minutes and grabbed a handgun from inside the vehicle. He proceeded to “jump on top of her” and shot her twice in the head, according to his statement. On Saturday morning, Joseph Ferlazzo said he traveled to Waterbury for breakfast with his sister and her boyfriend. He told police he later moved his camper bus, with Emily Ferlazzo’s body still inside, to a friend’s property in the St. Albans area. Approximately 12 to 15 hours later, Joseph Ferlazzo reported dismembering his wife’s body using a hand saw, placing the remains in garbage bags inside the vehicle. The affidavit provides limited details over the following days but notes that Joseph Ferlazzo traveled to the New Hampshire home of his wife’s parents Monday. He claimed Emily Ferlazzo had left the couple’s vehicle during an argument Saturday and had not been seen since. Her parents filed a missing persons report with Vermont State Police, which issued a public notice hours later. Police received a 911 call just after midnight Tuesday morning to report that Joseph Ferlazzo had killed his wife. The call came from a friend, who said he had been offering a ride when Joseph Ferlazzo admitted to the killing. According to the affidavit, Joseph Ferlazzo was kicked out of the car. Police found Joseph Ferlazzo at a St. Albans convenience store later that day and brought him in for questioning. A search warrant executed on his camper bus revealed garbage bags with human remains and what appeared to be a hand saw behind the driver’s seat. Investigators said there was “a history of domestic violence” in the couple’s relationship prior to the alleged killing. Emily Ferlazzo’s mother told police she had previously seen her daughter with scratches or bruises and knew of three or four times a “physical altercation” had occurred between them.
