There’s a lot of pressure with being a player in the NFL. But to Jacksonville Jaguars defensive tackle Dawuane Smoot, it doesn’t compare to having to perform an emergency delivery of your newborn child at home.Early Tuesday morning, Smoot’s pregnant wife, Aumari, started experiencing contractions. Then, before the couple had the opportunity to leave for the hospital, she collapsed.”This contraction hits so hard. I’m falling to the ground. My body is telling me to push — I can feel it. And so I started to push,” Aumari told “Good Morning America.”Luckily, Dawuane was close by and caught Aumari before hitting the ground. The next thing he knew, the baby started coming out.”I catch Aumari and hold her up and also catch the baby at the same time. That was everything going through my mind: make sure everybody’s OK,” Dawuane said in the interview. ” just took a big, big breath and she started crying. , ‘OK, that’s great. We’re good.'”Dawuane immediately called 911. He said the operator on the line could hear the baby crying, indicating that was a good sign. The operator then instructed him to gently wipe the baby’s nose and mouth to ensure the baby had clear airways. Next, the operator told Dawuane to grab a shoestring.”I’m like, ‘What do we need a shoestring for?’ They’re like, ‘You have to clamp the umbilical cord,’ so I’m going, grabbing my shoes. I’ve never ripped out shoestrings faster in my life,” Dawuane said. The Smoots said that their new baby girl, Ahlani Moon Smoot, is happy and healthy, despite her chaotic entry into the world. Dawuane said it was one of the scariest moments of his life, praising his wife’s strength and giving her full credit for the successful delivery.
