
Saint Michael’s College celebrated home opening days for the baseball and softball teams the best way they could. Both Purple Knight squads won their first games at Doc Jacobs Field this season against the American International College Yellowjackets. The baseball team started the day with a 4-3 win in a full nine-inning battle. Saint Michael’s found themselves in a 3-0 deficit but responded with three straight unanswered runs in the third inning. Richard Gilboy scored the Purple Knights’ first runner at Doc Jacobs field this season on a fielder’s choice scenario via a grounder to second base. Max Kolifrath then cleared the bases with a game-tying two-run home run to left field. Josh Ayala then drove in the eventual game-winning run with an RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the fourth inning. Saint Michael’s also secured a 1-0 shutout victory in game two against AIC to start undefeated at 2-0 at home this season. Swanton, VT, native Gavin Nichols delivered a gem on the bump, striking out five batters, allowing three hits in six of the seven-inning affair. Gage Spagna drove in the only runner of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning after forcing a fielding error from the AIC defense, which led Jerry Guzman to score for Saint Michael’s. Saint Michael’s continued their home prowess on Saturday, picking up two more vicotries in another same-day doubleheader against AIC. The Purple Knights jumped out to an early 9-4 advantage leading to a 10-8 victory in game three of the weekend series. Saint Michael’s jumped out to an early lead after a two-RBI single from Jacob Smith helped fuel a 4-0 Purple Knights advantage after the first inning. AIC would respond with four straight runs in the next frame, but five unanswered runs from the Purple Knights helped seal the deal on a win for the home team. Game four took a bit longer for each team’s offenses to get going. Saint Michael’s would string together three runs of offense by the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to secure themselves the 12-9 victory. Five different Purple Knights finished with two hits in the win, including a big day at the plate from third baseman Frankie Blake. He accumulated three RBIs, one run and a double in his four at bats. Maddy Bull got the Purple Knight offense going with a three-RBI double in the bottom of the second inning. CJ Davidson and Emma Nordahl would add to their team’s offense with a pair of timely RBI hits to help extend Saint Michael’s lead to as big as 8-2. Colchester High School alum and Burlington, VT, native Maddy Booska would also chip in to the Saint Michael’s offensive attack with an RBI single of her own. Saint Michael’s would go on to win back-to-back games on Friday, April 3rd against AIC after earning a 6-2 win in game two of the four-game weekend series. Davidson would tally 3 RBIs in her two hits at the plate while the Purple Knight defense held the Yellowjackets to just two hits on offense. Saturday, April 4th did not feature the same winning success for Saint Michael’s softball leading themselves to drop the next two games at Doc Jacobs field. The Purple Knights attempted to comeback from an 8-0 hole tying the game at 9-9 heading into the top of the 7th. However, a three- RBI double from Jilien Ayala helped AIC regain control with the 13-9 advantage. Saint Michael’s did snag a pair of RBI singles to keep things interesting in the bottom of the 7th, but a game winning catch by Lauryn Ramalho sealed the deal for a 13-11 AIC win. In game 4, Saint Michael’s looked to battle back from an 8-1-hole tallying six runs in the sixth inning. However, it wasn’t quite enough for a comeback leading to the 9-7 defeat. Booska once again performed admirably at the plate with two hits, a double and scoring one run in her three at bats on offense.
