Survey cites communities with ‘eclectic mix’ of boutiques, restaurants
The nation’s smallest capital city was recognized Friday as a premier small-town shopping destination by editors and readers of USA Today.Montpelier was named the best small town in America for shoppers. The community, which prides itself on not having a McDonald’s, Starbucks or Walmart, was the runner-up in last year’s survey.Editors said they considered communities with fewer than 25,000 residents that offer an ‘eclectic mix’ of boutiques, restaurants, antique stores and farmer’s markets. “Some people may say, ‘Really? Montpelier the best small town for shopping?’ But when you think about it, there are not that many communities that have small independent bookstores, and independent toy stores, you know? Hardly a chain store around,” said Dan Groberg, executive director of Montpelier Alive. “It’s rare and it’s unique and it’s special.”Editor’s cited Montpelier’s pedestrian-friendly shopping district, a stone’s throw from the Statehouse. Woodstock, Vermont, was also featured in this year’s Top 20 list, published on USA Today’s website 10 Best website.
