WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – It was warm in the north country Thursday, warm enough for Watertown to easily set a new high temperature record.
The old record of 54 degrees, set in 1971, fell Thursday morning. By early Thursday afternoon, the billboard outside the state office building on Washington Street read 62 degrees.
The mild conditions had plenty of people outside, walking dogs, taking strolls, and letting the kids play.
Tupuana Maya Morales is originally from Washington. She’s glad her son Mikha’el can experience the temperatures she’s used to.
“We can go outside! We can go outside. Winter break is coming up, so we can do more things instead of getting stuck in the house,” she said.
Of course, with Christmas nine days away and no snow, the inevitable question is – does it still feel like a holiday?
“With family around, yeah it does. But it would be nice to have a little bit of snow,” said Annamarie Hallett, who nonetheless was enjoying the warm weather.
Ski lovers, on the other hand, want a lot of snow. Dry Hill ski area just outside of Watertown is usually opened by now.
“We’ve got a lot of people chompin’ at the bit to get out here. We’ve made snow every chance we could right up until this warm spell,” said Tim McAtee, Dry Hill’s owner.
The good news for snow lovers? There is snow in this weekend’s forecast, at least for the Watertown area. The National Weather Service says several issues are possible.
