Summer is officially in full swing and tourism across our region is making a comeback. Vermont summer typically means spending our time outdoors, downtown or soaking up some sun along Lake Champlain. After nearly two years without typical Canadian tourism, summer 2022 feels more normal than ever. Kevin Lussier, from Montreal, has been visiting the Vermont and Northern New York area for years. “We’re really happy to be back,” Lussier said. He said the best part about his trips is getting to take in all the region has to offer and finding new places to share with friends.”We have few friends back in Canada who are seeing all our videos that we’re making on Facebook and are already writing to me hey we want to go back with you,” Lussier said. As tourism continues to grow Church Street retailers & local organizations say it feels good to see more typical summer business.”With the Canadian border open again we get to see our Quebecers,” said Mark Bouchett, co-owner of Homeport, a home goods store. “It’s beginning to feel to feel a lot like Church Street.”The president of the Alliance Française of the Lake Champlain Region, Dana Baron, shares a similar sentiment, but said there’s always room for more visitors. “I don’t think the numbers are back up to where they used to be,” said Baron. “I think there’s still a lot of room for people to come down, but it certainly feels really good to have people coming down visiting us.”Colin Hilliard, with Burlington Business Association, said seeing tourism increase in the area is a result of the hard work of local business owners and organizations who’ve been waiting to see visitors back again.”A lot of folks have been working hard in the city to really put our best foot forward this summer and provide a safe and fun environment downtown for folks to visit,” Hilliard said.As we look forward to the rest of the summer everyone is expecting to see more visitors in the area and a more vibrant, exciting downtown.
