After Vermont’s primary election last month, one republican was nominated to run for four different state offices. It’s not the first time H. Brooke Paige has run for multiple nominations. He appeared on the ballot for attorney general, auditor of accounts, secretary of state, and treasurer. Now, in the general election, he will only be on the ballot for secretary of state and treasurer. “Brooke Paige got in, won the primaries in all those races, to make sure Democrats could not win the Republican primaries,” explained Paul Dame, chair of the Vermont Republican Party. The Republican party had potential candidates for some of the positions that H. Brooke Paige ultimately ran for, but those candidates either decided not to run or worked in an office that accepted federal funding so they weren’t able to. “That’s actually an issue that’s come up in a couple of places, where, we have a candidate who’s interested and willing but because there’s so much federal funding in a lot of what happens in Vermont, some people in certain positions are not able to run because of the Hatch Act,” explained Dame. It was Brooke Paige’s intent to run for the open positions to ensure the Democratic party wouldn’t be able to have someone on the ballot instead. After the primary election, the GOP nominated Rick Morton as auditor of accounts, who worked in the Brattleboro Bank’s compliance department. The GOP also nominated Mike Tagliavia, a retired small business owner, for Attorney General. “I think that the issue of public safety is going to be really important in this election, and the AG’s office is really where we have the opportunity to make that case, and that’s what Mike plan to do in his campaign,” said Dame. Paige’s name being on the ballot several times is leading to questions from the Vermont Democratic Party.“To Me, that shows that they are a desperate party that are not able to put up serious candidates. H. Brooke Paige just never comes close to winning anything and to me, that’s like, we can’t find anyone else,” said Anne Lezak, Vermont Democratic Party Chair. Paul Dame said one of his goals is to recruit more candidates to run in future elections “I’ve only been in for a year here and I’m taking it more seriously than the party has taken it in the past. six years ago, the party was so disinterested that the party ran no one, and that’s a change this year,” he said. If Brooke Paige should win both state treasurer and secretary of state, the governor would have to appoint someone to fill whichever position he does not choose.
