Chazy High School soccer did what it does best when it comes to playing in Section VII title games, winning them. Both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams were able to win their Class D championship games, creating space for the 38th Section VII trophy for the boys, and the 17th for the girls. “We’re feeling pretty excited,” said Chazy boys’ soccer junior Peter LaBarge. “It’s always exciting to win sectionals.””It feels great,” said Chazy girls’ soccer junior Ava McAuliffe. “It feels good to have the adrenaline rush and everyone is grateful to be here.”The boys kicked off their match in the morning against the Schroon Lake Newcomb High School combo soccer team, but they did not let the wake-up call for an 11 a.m. match slow down their scoring. Less than four minutes in the contest, Chazy senior Luke Moser scored first for the Eagles to give his team an early 1-0 lead. “It was huge,” Moser said. “We talked about getting an early goal and it kind of set the mindset for the rest of the game.”From there, Chazy didn’t hold back. LaBarge scored the next two goals. His first came in the first half with a header score off a nice pass from senior teammate Reagan Dudyak. His second was in the second half, off a breakaway opportunity in which he was able to convert to give Chazy the 3-0 lead and win. “It felt nice,” LaBarge said. “But again, it’s a team thing. I have to give credit to them in the back, winning there, playing defense well and getting it up for me to do my job. Everyone played well today.”The girls played strong defense throughout their contest, holding Boquet Valley Central High school to no goals until the 19:05 mark in the second half. Fresh off a hat trick in the Class D semifinals, Chazy junior captain Ava McAuliffe scored both of the two goals in the girl’s 2-1 victory. Her first was in the first half off a breakaway opportunity. Her second was in the second half after finishing a rebound off an initial shot at the net from Chazy first-year Lily Pratt. She hopes her and the rest of the team’s efforts will push them to get closer to chance at girls’ New York high school state soccer title in SUNY Cortland. “It just made me feel like I did my job,” McAuliffe said. “I love my team and I want to do everything for them and hopefully this is a pathway to go on to (SUNY) Cortland.”Today’s win was also a part of a redemption tour for the Chazy girls’ squad, after losing in the 2021 Class D championship to Willsboro high school. “Last year didn’t go the way we wanted it to,” McAuliffe said. “That gave us motivation to come back to this game and shut it down and move on.”Chazy head coach John Tregan also enjoyed the moment of winning a championship in his first season on the job. It was an important goal for him to accomplish after spending a few years on the Chazy boys’ team as a player and an assistant, but also was proud of what his players were able to do on the field to accomplish it. “To finally accomplish that feels so great,” Tregan said. “The girls put in so much time and effort into this, and they won this. It’s not the coaches, it’s not other people, they earned all of this … it means a lot… just how important it is for us, and how excited we are for them.”Both teams advance to the New York State Public High School Association (NYPHSA) Class D regional finals. Time is still to be determined, but the date for those matchups is set on Saturday, Nov. 5.”We just got to practice hard throughout the week,” McAuliffe said. “We’re just going to play the same way and hopefully things will go all right again.””We’re going all the way,” LaBarge said. “That’s what our mindset is. We’re not going to be stopped by Section X, we’re going to outwork them, we’re going to outwork everyone. We’re just a bunch of dogs.”
