MIANA: AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, THIS IS A DEVASTATING LOSS FOR THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. I WAS ABLE TO SPEAK TO THE PRINCIPAL HERE AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND SHE CONFIRMED SHE WAS A STUDENT HERE. SHE GRADUATED IN 2021 BEFORE HEADING OFF TO THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY. SHE WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL HERE AND WAS A PROMINENT MARCHING BAND MEMBER. THIS SUMMER, SHE VOLUNTEERED WITH THE MARCHING TIGERS. THE PRINCIPAL SAYS SHE WAS BELOVED IN THE COMMUNITY. PART OF A LARGE FAMILY ROOTED HERE IN NORTHERN KENTUCKY. SHE WAS STUDYING ABROAD IN SOUTH KOREA THIS SEMESTER AND WAS AMONG THE 151 KILLED AT A HALLOWEEN GATHERING IN SEOUL. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, MANY OF THOSE HURT WERE IN THEIR TEENS OR EARLY >> THE CRUSH OF 20’S. PEOPLE HAPPENED IN THE ALLEYWAY BEHIND ME HERE. IT WAS QUITE CROWDED. THIS WAS THE FIRST HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION SINCE COVID RESTRICTIONS HERE IN SEOUL HAD BEEN LOOSENED. IT’S NOW A POLICE SCENE. MIANA: ACCORDING TO ANNE GIESKE ‘ ’S SOCIAL MEDIA, SHE CELEBRATED HER 20TH BIRTHDAY JUST DAYS AGO. WE SPOKE WITH THE PRINCIPAL MORE AND HE TELLS ME THERE WILL BE A PRIVATE GATHERING HERE TONIGHT. University of Kentucky student among 153 killed in South Korea Halloween crowd surge
An international tragedy has claimed the life of a University of Kentucky student.More than 150 people so far have been confirmed to have died in the crowd surge that happened at a Halloween celebration in Seoul, South Korea on Saturday.Among them was Anne Gieske, a junior in UK’s nursing program.UK President Eli Capilouto informed the campus community via a letter on Sunday afternoon of Gieske’s death in the incident.”We have been in contact with Anne’s family and will provide whatever support we can now and in the days ahead as they cope with this indescribable loss,” said Capilouto.”We will be there for those in our community who knew and loved Anne.
