Turning drier for July Fourth

Even Monday looks pretty good

Updated: 6:18 PM EDT Jul 2, 2023

WEATHER ALERT. GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. I’M METEOROLOGIST ANDREW BRODSKY WITH AN UPDATE ON SOME SERIOUS FLASH FLOODING ONGOING IN NORTHERN NEW YORK. LIFE THREATENING AS WELL. SO A LOT OF THE ACTIVITY IS STILL ONGOING AT THIS POINT. WE HAVE SOME SHOWERS AND DOWNPOURS CONTINUING IN THE REGION, ALTHOUGH THE GENERALLY BEEN STARTING TO FALL APART. SO WE HAVE STILL SOME WATER THAT IS STREAMING DOWN ALONG THE RIVERS. SO THE RIVERS ARE PRETTY MUCH CRESTING AT THIS POINT, SEEING ABOUT THE WORST FLOODING THROUGHOUT THE DAY. AND WE EXPECTING CONDITIONS TO GRADUALLY IMPROVE AS WE GET THROUGH THE EVENING. WE STILL HAVE ONE FLASH FLOOD WARNING HERE INTO NORTHERN CLINTON COUNTY FOR ELLENSBURG AND ALTONA. YOU CAN SEE A LOT OF THE SHOWERS ARE STARTING TO FIZZLE OUT AT THIS POINT. SO CERTAINLY SOME GOOD NEWS AS WE EXPECT SOME IMPROVEMENT IN THE COMING HOURS AS WE GET INTO FRANKLIN COUNTY. HAD A FLASH FLOOD WARNING EXPIRE. SO JUST A GENERAL FLOOD WARNING AT THIS POINT. SO NO PARTICULAR CONCERNING RISK AS THE SHOWERS ARE CONTINUING TO FIZZLE OUT AT THIS POINT. AS WE LOOK AT THE RAINFALL TOTALS OVER THE LAST 24 HOURS, VERY IMPRESSIVE. SOME OF THE TOTALS YOU WOULD EXPECT IN ABOUT TWO MONTHS TIME. WE SAW JUST OVER THE LAST DAY. SO 7 TO 10, PERHAPS LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS THERE FOR BELMONT OFF TO THE NORTH AND EAST, INCLUDING THE ELLENSBURG AREA. AND AS WE LOOK AT JUST THE LAST THREE HOURS WITH SOME OF THOSE SHOWERS AND DOWNPOURS THAT ARE REALLY FLARED UP AND SAT OVER THE SAME AREAS, ABOUT 3 TO 5IN OR HIGHER TO THE SOUTH OF MALONE OVER TOWARDS BELMONT AND INTO THE LINE MOUNTAIN AREA AS WELL. SOUTH OF ELLENBERG. SO CERTAINLY SOME SUBSTANTIAL RAINFALL THAT’S BEEN ADDED ON TOP OF EVERYTHING WE SAW LAST NIGHT. WE DO HAVE A REPORT OF SOME ROADS CLOSED JUST IN THE LAST HOUR OR TWO. THIS IS IN THE BELMONT CENTER AREA. AND WE HAD A CAMPGROUND EVACUATE WITH SOME WATER RESCUES. THIS AFTERNOON AND ELLENBERG AS WELL. AND THAT’S WHERE OUR OWN METEOROLOGIST MATT DE LORETTO IS RIGHT NOW. HE’S WITH THE WEATHER LAB AT THE INTERSECTION OF ROUTE 11 AND ROUTE 190. SO, MATT, I’LL SEND THINGS OVER TO YOU. HOW OUR CONDITIONS LOOKING, ANDREW, THEY’RE NOT LOOKING TOO GOOD. BUT WHAT I WILL SAY IS THAT THE RIVER SEEMS TO HAVE CRESTED. THE WATER LEVEL HAS SORT OF STAYED AT THE SAME PLACE FOR THE LAST HOUR OR SO. BUT I WANT TO SHOW YOU WHAT’S GOING ON OUTSIDE. WHEN I FIRST GOT HERE, JUST OVER A COUPLE OF HOURS AGO, THIS HOUSE AND FRONT PORCH WAS NOT UNDERWATER AT ALL. IT WAS TOTALLY DRY AROUND THE PROPERTY. SO SINCE THEN, THE WATER HAS RISEN ABOUT FIVE, SIX, EVEN SEVEN FEET IN SOME CASES. AND IT IS THE NORTH BRANCH OF THE GREAT SHAYS RIVER. AND YOU CAN SEE THE WATER’S RAGING OVER THERE UNDER THE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE, WHICH NORMALLY YOU CAN WALK RIGHT ACROSS. BUT THE WATER IS UP TO THAT LEVEL. AND WE’VE GOT AN EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE SHOT HERE OF THIS ROGUE SHED. NOW, I TALKED TO SOMEBODY WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS THE PERSON THAT OWNS THIS SHED ABOUT A HALF A MILE UP THE ROAD. SO THE WATER HAS HAD SO MUCH POWER THAT IT’S CARRIED THE SHED ALL THE WAY DOWN HERE, SORT OF HELD UP ALONG THE GUARDRAIL THERE. AND AGAINST THE FENCE OF THE RIVER THAT GOES TOWARD 190. STILL A LOT OF LAWN EQUIPMENT IN THAT SHED. SOME LAWN MOWERS, LEAF BLOWERS AND SUCH. AND THEY’VE ACTUALLY BLOCKED OFF ACCESS TO ROUTE 190. IF YOU’RE ON ROUTE 11 AND YOU’RE TRYING TO ACCESS 190, IT IS CLOSED RIGHT NOW BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE ALL OF THAT WATER FROM THE GREAT BRANCH OR THE NORTH BRANCH OF THE GREAT LAZY RIVER COMING RIGHT ACROSS THE ROAD THERE AT THE INTERSECTION. SO BOTH WAYS ARE CLOSED RIGHT NOW. EVEN SOME WATER GOING ACROSS ROUTE 11. YOU CAN SEE THAT AT THE INTERSECTION THERE. IT’S SORT OF THE LOWEST POINT. AND WE’RE RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM NORTHERN ADIRONDACK JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL. AND YOU CAN SEE THAT THERE THE THE FRONT LAWN AT THAT SCHOOL IS COMPLETELY FLOODED OVER, EVEN STRETCHING ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE MOBILE GAS STATION RIGHT THERE. YOU COULD SEE A LOT OF WATER PONDING COMING ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE STREET FROM HOW MUCH THOSE RIVER BANKS HAVE OVERFLOWED. SO IT DOES LOOK LIKE, AS I MENTIONED, THAT THE WATER IS SORT OF HIT ITS HIGHEST POINT. WE’RE NOT REALLY SEEING IT RISE ANY MORE THAN IT HAS, ESPECIALLY IN THE LAST 30 MINUTES. SO HOPEFULLY WE’LL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THIS SITUATION. HOPEFULLY THINGS CONTINUE TO IMPROVE AS WE GO THROUGH THIS EVENING. LOOKS LIKE THE RAIN IS LIGHTING UP AS WELL. IT’S BEEN RAINING ALL AFTERNOON HERE AND IN ABOUT THE LAST 20 MINUTES OR SO, I’D SAY THE RAIN HAS CERTAINLY LIGHTENED UP. SO WE’LL SEND IT ON OVER. BACK TO ANDREW GRETZKY, WHO HAS A LITTLE BIT MORE ON WHAT TO EXPECT FOR THE REST OF THE EVENING. ANDREW. ALL RIGHT. MATT. WELL, THANKS FOR THAT UPDATE. CERTAINLY SOME DRAMATIC VIDEO THERE AS AS WE HEAD DEEPER INTO THE EVENING, WE’LL STILL HAVE SOME OF THESE SHOWERS AND DOWNPOURS AROUND. BUT THE TREND AS WE GET DEEPER INTO THE EVENING IS FOR A LOT OF THE ACTIVITY TO BE FIZZLING OUT. SO THE RIVERS WILL BE STARTING TO RECEDE. FLOOD WATERS WILL BE IMPROVING. AND IF YOU’RE JUST CURIOUS HOW CONDITIONS ARE IN THE CHICAGO AREA, THAT’S WHERE THE NASCAR EVENT IS TONIGHT. DO HAVE A FLASH FLOOD WARNING UNTIL 6:30 P.M. THERE AS WELL. BUT AS WE FAST FORWARD DEEPER INTO THE EVENING, WE’RE EXPECTING A LOT OF THAT RAIN TO KIND OF FIZZLE OUT AND SHIFT TO THE SOUTH. SO HOPEFULLY SOME IMPROVING CONDITIONS FOR THE RACE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE HOURS. BUT FOR NOW, WE’LL SEND YOU BACK
