The lights shined bright at the Plattsburgh State Field House for a league wrapping up its 49th season. The North Country Soccer League championship game was back at Cardinal Country for the second year in a row, featuring a competitive match between Brennan Buick GMC and Chazy Orchards. The two clubs represented the seven teams competing this season, ranging in talent from recent high school graduates to former and current college players like SUNY ESF goalie and NCSL MVP Gabriel Huchro. The netminder had a jaw-dropping performance in the finale, stopping shot after shot from Chazy. However, the Orchards squad picked it up in the second half. A three-goal output from Craig Botton, Issac Merril and Reid LaValley was enough to put their team over the edge taking the 3-2 with championship T-shirts and a trophy. The bigger goal from league organizer Brent Giroux to complete the 49-year milestone was to not glorify the winners, but, instead, to provide a space to play each and every summer. “A big thing we say when talking for adults who are living in the area or moving back in the area is to give them something to do,” Giroux said. “Sometimes it’s hard to find, so that’s one of the main goals of the league is to give people a social outlet.”Giroux already plans to bring the league back for its 50th season next summer, with more soccer for adults across the North Country to take part in.
