The western part of Killarney Drive in Burlington was closed off to vehicle and pedestrian traffic for hours on Tuesday after a suspect barricaded himself inside a homeowner’s garage.The Burlington Police Department reported that they received a call from the homeowner just after 5 p.m. about someone trying to break into their residence. The homeowner was not present at the time and noticed it on a remote security camera.Officers were dispatched to the home and located a man who barricaded himself inside the garage.The BPD’s Crisis Negotiations Team, as well as the emergency response unit and emergency response vehicle, were deployed to the location as well.Negotiations continued for hours as police hoped for the suspect to surrender peacefully.During the negotiations, while an officer was talking on his blow horn, a sound that resonated like a “gunfire shot” was heard.Burlington police Chief Jon Murad confirmed the sound did not come from the police department.He later confirmed the individual inside was deceased.“This isn’t the outcome that we want for something like this,” said Chief Murad. “The officers here worked many hours attempting to avoid this kind of outcome. I know our negotiators take this kind of thing hard. They work closely with the person. Most of the time, we don’t have this kind of outcome.”Chief Murad said the medical examiners will properly evaluate the scene and record it properly.He also said the individual’s name will be released at a later point.
