No. 8 Syracuse second half dominance overwhelming for Vermont
Catamounts allow seven second-half goals in 9-1 loss
One of the toughest defenses in the America East wasn’t enough to halt No. 8 Syracuse, in the Orange 9-1 victory over Vermont on Sunday. Fresh off a 6-2 win over Sacred Heart on Friday, head coach Kate Pfeifer knew that her team was going to need to step up the defensive pressure on 2022’s fourth-best scoring offense. At the end of the first half, the Catamounts were down 2-1, showing real poise against the Orange. “I think we were playing it pretty well,” Pfeifer said. “Toe to toe, really sticking to the game plan through two quarters and even into the start of the second half. I felt pretty good in the first few minutes and with the way we were able to get pressure to the ball.” In the second half, the team fell back on its heels. Miss communications led to seven unanswered Syracuse goals, handing Vermont its first loss of the season.”Syracuse really lifted in terms of the way they were playing specifically in the pocket and trying to create numbers up really close to the ball,” Pfeifer said. “We started to struggle with our ability, ability to play against that and defend it. Then we started chasing.”
