A classic North Country rivalry kicked off on the gridiron to open week one of high school football in northern New York. Peru High School extended its winning streak to four games in a row against Beekmantown High School after a 33-17 victory on the road. Both teams battled back and forth until a trio of three rushing touchdowns in the third quarter alone by junior Sawyer Schlitt helped extend the Nighthawks lead. Meanwhile, not too far from there, Saranac Lake High School showcased a dominant performance on both sides of the ball, leading to a 28-12 win over Plattsburgh High School. Saranac Lake senior Markus Navarra scored three touchdowns for his squad in the win. The football action in the North Country will continue on Saturday, Sept. 8. Saranac High School will play host to Section X’s Ogdensburg Free Academy at 1:30 p.m. Ausable Valley High School will host Moriah High School later that night at 7:30 p.m.
