The “Leave No Trace” organization has selected Mt. Philo State Park as a 2023 Spotlight site.As outdoor areas all over the country are being impacted by record use, the new initiative shines a light on communities rising to meet this challenge with multi-day, onsite education and stewardship programs. From Oct. 13-15, a Subaru/Leave No Trace traveling team will be at Mt. Philo State Park in Charlotte, to work with the community and local land agencies on restoration and stewardship projects.Sites are nominated for the Leave No Trace Spotlight initiative by local land agencies or community groups. Mt. Philo is one of 20 diverse sites chosen from across the country for the 2023 spotlight.Each site faces unique environmental challenges. The goal of the initiative is to provide each Spotlight area with relevant Leave No Trace tools that address the impacts the site is facing.There are two events to be held during the initiative. On Saturday, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m., there will be a stewardship event, focusing on invasive species removal. On Sunday, Oct. 15 from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m., there will be a guided historical hike, with information on the cultural and natural history of Mt. Philo State Park. Both events are free and open to the public.
