A university in Washington D.C. known for its groundbreaking work for the deaf and hard of hearing is using a new invention that could be a game changer for football players.Gallaudet University and AT&T worked together to create a 5G football helmet for deaf and hard-of-hearing football players. It’s being used by the Bisons football team. “To know that it actually happened and we made history, it is even better than I thought,” Gallaudet Bison Football Coach Chuck Goldstein told WJLA.Advancing communication on the football field isn’t new to the university. Gallaudet says it should not go unnoticed that the school invented the modern-day huddle in 1894 as a way to conceal hand signals from another deaf opponent.Coach Goldstein says the helmet will be a useful item for the team.”The most important thing was it opened up access to communication,” Goldstein said, adding that bringing the tech to the team is important because “sometimes I can’t get the attention of our quarterback.”Recently, the helmet was used for the first time in the Bison’s win against the Hilbert College Hawks. “I think it’s mind-blowing using this kind of technology, super advanced, especially when you are talking about using it in the game of football. So, truly blown away and I can see how it benefits us in a game-time situation, so hats off to AT&T for making this happen,” Freshman Quarterback Trevin Adams said. Thanks to the helmet, the coaching staff can send plays by way of a tablet to a digital display in the helmet’s visor.”With this helmet, you don’t have to look to the sideline to try to see what the coach is saying, you can just focus on the huddle (and) get the play directly from the helmet,” Adams said.Junior Quarterback Brandon Washington said the helmet helps with clear communication on the field. “Yes, I really think it can change the game for us hard of hearing and deaf people, yes,” Washington said. Special Teams Coordinator Shelby Bean is impressed with the invention. “Unlimited possibilities for leveling the playing field, honestly. It’s something that I never could have imagined can happen,” Bean said.WJLA reports that AT&T made a large donation to the school as part of the effort. A university in Washington D.C. known for its groundbreaking work for the deaf and hard of hearing is using a new invention that could be a game changer for football players.

“To know that it actually happened and we made history, it is even better than I thought,” Gallaudet Bison Football Coach Chuck Goldstein told WJLA.

Advancing communication on the football field isn’t new to the university. Gallaudet says it should not go unnoticed that the school invented the modern-day huddle in 1894 as a way to conceal hand signals from another deaf opponent.

Coach Goldstein says the helmet will be a useful item for the team.

“The most important thing was it opened up access to communication,” Goldstein said, adding that bringing the tech to the team is important because “sometimes I can’t get the attention of our quarterback.”

Recently, the helmet was used for the first time in the Bison’s win against the Hilbert College Hawks.

Thanks to the helmet, the coaching staff can send plays by way of a tablet to a digital display in the helmet’s visor.

“With this helmet, you don’t have to look to the sideline to try to see what the coach is saying, you can just focus on the huddle (and) get the play directly from the helmet,” Adams said.

Junior Quarterback Brandon Washington said the helmet helps with clear communication on the field.

“Yes, I really think it can change the game for us hard of hearing and deaf people, yes,” Washington said.

Special Teams Coordinator Shelby Bean is impressed with the invention.

“Unlimited possibilities for leveling the playing field, honestly. It’s something that I never could have imagined can happen,” Bean said.

WJLA reports that AT&T made a large donation to the school as part of the effort.
