Playoff season is officially underway in the North Country, with gymnastics being the first sport to start sectional championships. The event, which took place at Plattsburgh High School, featured three schools from Clinton County, Peru, Beekmantown and the host school, Plattsburgh, competing in four different events. The host school, Plattsburgh, won the event, edging out Peru by two points to take the sectional banner home for their school. “I think everyone was so proud of each other,” said Plattsburgh sophomore Cayleigh Latour. “We’re proud of us because we worked so hard this season and I’m proud of everyone on my team for pulling through.”The individual winner came from a school outside of the three schools with teams. Una Hall, a sophomore from Seton Catholic, came into the day as the only Seton Catholic student to compete in gymnastics and grabbed the highest score in the Bars event, which helped lead her to the highest individual score out of all Section VII gymnasts. “I was super happy to be representing my own school with gymnastics and to win for my school,” Hall said. Hall and eight other gymnasts will represent Section VII and their schools at the New York State Gymnastics Championships in March 2024. Those names include Hall and Latour, but also feature Peru’s Lauren Prescott and Ella LaBarge, Beekmantown’s Shawna Manor and Gabby Rolodakis and Plattsburgh’s Grace Willmott and Maleah Lunan. The state championships will take place at Clarence High School in Erie County, New York, on Saturday, March 2.
