BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The suspect in a triple-shooting in Burlington over the weekend pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Monday morning. Jason Eaton, 48, was arrested Sunday afternoon in the shooting of three Palestinian American students.

Monday morning, Eaton pleaded not guilty to three charges of attempted murder and was ordered held without bail until his next court appearance, which has not yet been scheduled.

At around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives detained Eaton in connection with the Saturday night shooting that put three 20-year-old Palestinian Americans in the hospital.

According to court paperwork, Hisham Awartani, a student at Brown University, was shot in the spine; Kinnan Abdalhamid, a student at Haverford College, was struck in the chest; and Tahseen Ahmed, a student at Trinity College, was hit in the glute. Two of the victims are in stable condition and the third is seriously injured.

Eaton is charged with three counts of second-degree attempted murder, which has a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Police say investigators carried out a warrant at Eaton’s residence in a building right outside where the shooting took place on North Prospect Street. According to Burlington Police, Sunday was spent investigating the scene with the help of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as the FBI.

At around 3:30 Sunday, ATF agents encountered Eaton at the scene of the shooting and detained him.

After getting a search warrant for his residence officers found additional evidence and probable cause connecting Eaton to the shooting.
