A bicyclist was killed in a hit-in-run accident on Shelburne Road in South Burlington late Saturday night.South Burlington Police said officers were called to the scene, which was right in front of Pauline’s Cafe and Restaurant, at around 11:45 p.m. A witness reported that the cyclist had been hit by a yellow Mini Cooper that continued driving north and never stopped to check on the victim. Officials said the victim sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. The victim’s identity has not yet been identified pending notification of family members.Officers were able to track down the Mini Cooper at the Travel Lodge in South Burlington, which was approximately 1.3 miles from the scene of the accident.The driver of the vehicle was identified as 38-year-old Steven Olango of South Burlington. According to authorities, Olango has a criminal history with the State of Vermont, including 16 arrests and 11 convictions. Olango was arrested by Burlington Police in July 2023 for DUI.Olango’s license had been suspended at the time of Saturday’s crash and his vehicle registration was expired, authorities disclosed.Olango is being held on $5,000 bail and will be facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident — fatal and negligent operation.While on the scene, a South Burlington Police cruiser blocking off part of the roadway was hit by a driver traveling southbound toward Burlington at around 1:15 Sunday morning.The cruiser was destroyed, but fortunately, no officers were inside of it at the time of this collision. The driver who struck the cruiser was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was processed for DUI. SBPD said formal criminal charges for the driver are pending toxicology results.
