The man accused of setting fire to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Burlington office faced a federal judge on Tuesday.In the criminal complaint affidavit laid out against 35-year-old Shant Michael Soghomonian, the Bureau of Alchohol, Tobacco, and Firearms says there is probably a case that he “maliciously damaged a commercial building used in interstate commerce.”Burlington Police Department released his photo on Friday.It didn’t take long for Gavin Grandy, the manager of the Inn at Burlington in South Burlington, to call police.He recognized Sogohomonian as a long-term guest at the Inn for nearly two months.Grandy told police that Soghomonian was often wearing the same outfit that he was captured in the photo.On Sunday, Williston and Shelburne police spotted a vehicle with a New York license plate that was registered to Soghomonian at the Quality Inn in Shelburne.Soghomonian was arrested at the scene.On Tuesday, he made his first federal court appearance. At the hearing, the federal judge read him the violation he’s accused of, his rights, and then determined a date and time for his detention hearing.Soghomonian will appear back at federal court this Thursday at 1 p.m. There was no plea given since a Grand Jury will have to indict him first. He currently remains in jail.If convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison.
