The state of Vermont opened two emergency shelters for families on Friday, one is at the Waterbury Armory and the other at the old Williston Vermont State Police barracks. A few weeks ago, the state said the goal was for the sites to open Nov. 1 and were thankful they could meet their goal. The sites include private rooms for families, a community space, bathrooms and a kitchen — they also include a washer and dryer.Books, toys and things for children were donated by the Williston community as well, since it is a family shelter. The state said the sites will be staffed with state employees, and the goal is to keep the families in these shelters throughout the winter season. A handful moved into the two sites Friday, with more expected in the near future.”We offer services here every day that will be supporting the needs of the family members. So those services will range from health care services to economic support services, housing services, as well as job support services,” said Kristin McClure, the interim deputy secretary of the Agency of Human Services. The state said they are not sure if the shelters will remain open after winter adverse weather conditions end and will re-evaluate at that time.
