CLINTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE CLASSIC DAY 2 — SATURDAY, DEC. 28Franklin Academy high school girls’ basketball seemed unbeatable in the North Country — until they met Peru high school. The Huskies, who beat all their opponents by an average of 44 points in their first five games of the season, were not able to do that against the Nighthawks, losing 54-49. The game was a major bounce-back win for Peru, which had just lost on Friday, Dec. 27, to Saranac high school on the opening day of the CCC Holiday Classic. “I think it was very special,” said Peru forward Reese Duprey. “Huge team win. We didn’t give up on a single play.”Duprey led the Nighthawks in scoring with 18 points, but she emphasized that everyone on the team played a major factor on both the offensive and defensive end of the ball to make the upset win possible.”Everyone works their butt off, and everyone contributing is amazing,” Duprey said. “We all deserved that win. Our intensity was up today, our energy was up, our bench was up … we just kept on going.”Bella Barry and Natalia Gushlaw-Mirville also chipped in with 9 points each. Alyvia Roberts led all scorers in this contest with 26 points, tallying several field goals in the paint. Saranac high school girls’ basketball was able to sweep the weekend at Clinton Community College in a 52-37 win over Beekmantown high school. Brenna Ducatte had another dominant offensive outing for Saranac, pouring in a game-high 27 points. She dropped in three 3-pointers and mixed in a variety of stepback midrange jumpers and layups into her scoring. Maddie Gagnier also chipped in with 10 points. Payton Parliament led Beekmantown in scoring with 19 points, while Grace McCasland added 9 points. For the boys’ basketball games, Beekmantown took down Saranac in a tight battle by the end of the first half. A 17-16 Eagle lead expanded to 38-26 by the end of the third quarter, leading to the 51-41 win. The Eagles were led by Leo Williams, who finished with a game high 24 points. Carson Duffield paced the Spartans with 19 points, knocking in two 3-pointers as well. The Franklin Academy boys’ basketball team also swept the weekend at Clinton Community College with a dominant 62-30 win over Peru. Issac Baker and Blake Hannah each scored 12 points in a balanced scoring effort for the Huskies. The Nighthawks’ leading scorer was Camden Sweeney with 9 points. CLINTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE CLASSIC DAY 1 — FRIDAY, DEC. 27The biggest shot for the fifth annual high school basketball Holiday Classic at Clinton Community College came in the first game of the tournament. With less than nine seconds to go, it was Beekmantown High School’s Garrett Pelkey who put in a putback layup, seemingly sealing a comeback effort against Franklin Academy High School to take the 59-58 lead. However, FA’s Brad Poupore raced down the court and finished a timely layup with less than two seconds to retake the lead and win the contest 60-59 as the buzzer sounded. The Huskies built a 15-4 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Their perimeter shooting helped them to finish the first half up 33-20 over the Eagles. However, Beekmantown battled back with strong interior finishing and rebounding, winning the fourth quarter 15-6. Regardless, Poupore’s last-second shot eliminated any possibility for a completed comeback to help Franklin Academy win its second straight game against Beekmantown this season. The two schools also matched up in girls’ basketball, this time with a much greater margin of victory for Franklin Academy, which won 70-25. The Huskies’ perimeter shooting paid dividends, knocking down 12 3-pointers from beyond the arc. Olivia Simser led that shooting with four 3-pointers, leading her to finish with a game high 27 points. Raegan McArdle also cashed four triples, finishing with 24 points. Beekmantown was led by Parliament, who scored 14 points. Saranac High School basketball was the next school to grab wins in the Holiday Classic, with both its boys’ and girls’ teams defeating Peru High School. The boys were first, as the Spartans secured the 55-41 win over the Nighthawks. Duffield paced Saranac with a game high 20 points, securing a near triple-double with 15 rebounds and nine assists. Henry Napper also chipped in 16 points. Peru’s offense was led by Jordan Osborne, who scored a team-high 12 points, and 10 of his points were in the first half alone. In the girls’ game, Saranac won 48-33, backed by another strong outing from the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference’s top scorer, Ducatte. She led the Spartans with a game high 26 points, scoring 12 in the third quarter. Layla Pellerin and Lily Brown also chipped in with 9 points apiece. Eliana Trumper led the Nighthawks with 8 points in the contest. More games will be right back at Clinton Community College on Saturday, Dec. 28, starting at noon. See the full schedule below. See the highlights for Day 1 of the tournament in the video above.
