A Vermont woman has admitted to plotting her husband’s death in 2019. Angela Auclair was back in court on Friday to formally plead guilty and to receive her sentence.Angela Auclair was sentenced to 35 years to life in prison for the fatal shooting of her husband, David Auclair, in July 2019. However, she will only be required to serve 18 years in prison, minus credit for time served. The rest of her sentence was suspended. She will serve the remainder of the sentence on probation. David’s sister, Melisa Semprebon, appeared in court on Friday. She said her family doesn’t think the sentence serves justice. “If she could do this to him, what else is she capable of? My brother, my parents’ only son did not deserve this. No one does,” Semprebon said. “We have to protect everyone from what she is capable of.”Auclair pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the case. On Friday, the court accepted her plea. The state said the plea deal avoids a difficult trial. “In light of the witnesses, that would have to be called and statements that had been made previously, the state felt that this would be the best resolution for all concerned and hopefully would provide at least some small measure of closure for this family,” said deputy state’s attorney Susan Hardin. Auclair and her son, Kory George, were charged with plotting to kill Auclair, her husband and his stepfather.According to court documents and police, the duo worked together to burglarize a home in Colchester to steal a gun and used it to kill David Auclair a day later.Police believe David Auclair was lured to a secluded trail after receiving a call from a burner phone. Officials say he was then shot and killed.Semprebon said her brother’s final moments haunt her. “Can you imagine what was going through his mind in that moment? I can’t. It’s one of my recurring nightmares,” she told the court. “While this is happening, he is desperately trying to pull himself under the truck for protection.”George had previously been sentenced to spend over 7 years in prison for illegal gun possession related to the case. He entered a guilty plea in September 2023, accepting a deal that would have required him to testify against his mother. However, because she agreed to change her plea, this was no longer necessary.Auclair’s defense attorney, Christopher Montgomery, told the court he believes she can be rehabilitated. “Ms. Auclair does have the chance, the opportunity and the ability to rehabilitate,” Montgomery said. “With these conditions, very strict conditions, she will have a lot of work to do. But I have no doubt that she could do that.”If Auclair violates the conditions of her plea deal, she could face additional time behind bars.
