4 home games set up busy Saturday afternoon for Plattsburgh State Athletics

The Rock the Red weekend at Plattsburgh State University (PSU) had a busy Saturday to close out the two-day home doubleheader for the Cardinals’ four major winter sports teams.A ranked win for No. 6 Plattsburgh women’s hockey highlighted the day, securing a 2-1 win over the No. 10 Cortland State Red Dragons. This win was a nice bounce-back game for the Cardinals after dropping the first game of the home doubleheader between these two schools 1-0 on Friday, Jan. 31.”I think our effort level was there,” said Plattsburgh State women’s hockey head coach Kevin Houle. “We just had to tweak things a bit in terms of how we play … (Cortland) is a real good team and is disciplined in how they play. (Saturday) was a great effort from start to finish. We weathered the storm from the first, came out with the one-goal lead, but from then on, we really turned it around.”After being held scoreless a night ago, it was Plattsburgh who struck first after a long-distance shot from Adriana Urban ran across the top of the net for an early 1-0 lead in the first period. Urban believed she may have gotten a bit lucky with the score, but was happy to see the puck hit the back of the net. “I was in shock,” Urban said. “I wasn’t expecting it, but I was definitely very excited when I scored.”It took until the second period, but a pass from Ciara Wall set up Mae Olshansky in stride to nail the top left corner of the net for what ultimately was the insurance goal for Plattsburgh, giving them a 2-0 lead. The Cardinals were able to hold on for the 2-1 win from there. For Plattsburgh, it was a confidence-boosting moment, taking their first victory against a Red Dragons squad they could see again in the upcoming SUNYAC postseason.”They took something from us last year in the SUNYAC final on our home ice,” Olshansky said. “Just coming in here and closing out the season series with them with a win was huge.”The first game that started the Saturday slate was also a victory for Plattsburgh women’s basketball. The Cardinals were able to take the 65-53 win against the Morrisville State University Mustangs. Plattsburgh shot just over 38 percent for the second half, leading them to score 20 points apiece in the third and fourth quarters. They outscored Morrisville 40-22 in the final 20 minutes as a team. Individually, Julia Greek and Saranac high school alumnus Payton Couture paced Plattsburgh in scoring with 18 and 14 points, respectively. The men’s basketball hardwood presented the first loss of the day, where Morrisville held off a late Plattsburgh comeback in the second half to win 86-80. The Mustangs’ efficient shooting, making nearly 52 percent of their shots from the field, helped lift them to victory.Karrem Sanders paced Morrisville with a game-high 21 points, scoring 16 of those points in the second half. Kareem Welch led Plattsburgh with 16 points off the bench. Ikechukwu Ezike chipped in with 13 points. Men’s hockey was the final game to close the weekend in a rivalry matchup against Oswego State University. Despite a strong 2-0 start on two straight power-play goals by Tyler Ramm and Shane Bondy in the first period, it was Oswego who used a three-goal third period to prevail 5-3. The Lakers were led by Matt McQuade and Brandon Cohen on offense, both scoring two goals apiece. Ramm led the Cardinals in scoring with two goals, both on the power play. See the highlights for all four games in the video above, voiced by NBC 5’s Noah Cierzan.
