THE RUTLAND SCULPTURE TRAIL WILL BE GETTING A NEW ADDITION IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS THIS WILL BE THE 14TH MARBLE STATUE ALONG THE TRAIL THROUGHOUT THE CITY OF RUTLAND, HIGHLIGHT A PIECE OF THE AREAS NOTABLE HISTORY. AN ARTIST WITH THE CARVING STUDIO AND SCULPTURE CENTER IN WEST RUTLAND IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON A PIECE DEPICTING THE GIFT-OF-LIFE MARATHON. RUTLAND HOLDS THE NATIONAL RECORD FOR DONATING BLOOD IN A SINGLE DAY IN 2013. THAT RECORD STILL STANDS WITH THE REGION COLLECTING OVER 23 HUNDRED PINTS OF BLOODS. THREE LOCAL RESIDENTS WILL BE FEATURED ON THE STATUE FOR CONTRIBUTIONS THAT HELPED REACH THE RECORD INCLUDING MARY OJALA WHO DONATED UP UNSTILL HER 100TH BIRTHDAY. AS WELL AS STEFANIE SCHAFFER, A BLOOD RECIPIENT WHO BECAME A G-O-L-M AMBASSADOR. Rutland Sculpture Trail announces new addition celebrating blood drive legacy
They’re scattered around the city of Rutland. Marble statues depict a piece of unique community history. Recently, the Rutland Sculpture Trail announced its 14th addition that will be coming to the city just in time for the Gift-of-Life Blood Drive Marathon in the fall. The statue celebrates the area’s national record for donating the most pints of blood in a single day in 2013, which is still held at 2,350 pints. The monument will feature prominent community members who have been credited with helping set the national record. It will include Mary Ojala, who donated blood until her 100th birthday, Bobby Poquette, a volunteer who frequently donated, and Stefanie Schaffer, a Rutland native, blood receiver, and Gift of Life Ambassador. The Rutland sculpture trail is a collaboration of multiple organizations, including the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center in West Rutland, where it was designed by Evan Morse and is currently being carved by his wife, Taylor Apostol.
