
A massive group of protesters has dispersed and Dorset Street is back open after activists and community members showed up at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in South Burlington.At least one person was arrested by federal agents and several protesters were detained during the incident.ICE agents had been at a home on Dorset Street to arrest a person allegedly involved in a multi-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning.After hours of tense activity and shouting, federal agents entered the home and arrested at least one person.The protesters became agitated, and some were detained.ICE agents attempted to leave the scene but were blocked by protesters. Members of local and state police were also there to ensure the safety of federal officers and protesters.Tear gas was deployed and loud bangs could be heard around 7 p.m. Several protesters could be seen running away and screaming as loud bangs and smoke filled the street.NBC5’s Jackson Stoever is on scene and will have more as soon as information becomes available. Members of the South Burlington Police Department said they were initially notified of a multi-vehicle crash near 345 Dorset St. just before 8 a.m.When officers arrived, they learned that ICE agents had attempted to arrest a person who lived on Dorset Street, and that person then tried to escape from those agents in a vehicle.During their attempt to flee, the person allegedly crashed into several ICE vehicles as well as another vehicle traveling south. The driver of that vehicle was not injured.The individual then got out of the car and ran away.Federal agents, some masked and some unmasked, quickly surrounded the building on Dorset Street, believing the subject was inside. Members of the advocacy group Migrant Justice also surrounded the area, with officers from the South Burlington Police Department and Vermont State Police troopers also on scene to ensure everyone’s safety.Migrant Justice told NBC5 that a guardian and a child were able to safely leave the apartment inside the building, but we have not been able to learn any additional information from the federal agents on scene.NBC5 has also reached out to the Department of Homeland Security, but has not heard back at this time. We are told that federal agents have not obtained a warrant to enter the apartment.South Burlington police said they were not made aware of immigration enforcement activity and only found out about what happened because of the crash investigation.Immigration officers had requested the department’s assistance at the scene as a large crowd of protesters gathered outside.The South Burlington Police Department stressed that they are on scene to ensure both the safety of the federal officers and the rights of the activists to peacefully protest. The department said it is not assisting federal agents with the enforcement of the alleged federal immigration violation.
