It’s way too early for Friday night fever, but a few schools still got some work in on the high school gridiron this summer. As part of Saranac Lake’s 7-on-7 football tournament, Gouverneur, General Brown, Saranac and the Red Storm all participated. It would come down to General Brown and Gouverneur for the championship. The Wildcats scored first as the quarterback delivered a strike to the end zone to put them up, 6-0. Gouverneur didn’t stop there. A dime by the QB hit his man in stride as the Wildcats scored again to take a 12-0 advantage. Then came General Brown. The quarterback rolled out to the right and dumped it off late to find his guy in the end zone.Another pass play a few minutes later led to a Lions score as they tied things up, 12-12. It would go into overtime as General Brown got the ball first and had three plays to score. On the first play, Gouverneur came up big with an interception to seal the game. Gouverneur head coach Sean Devlin said his team wanted to win after losing in last year’s championship game. “We lost last year in the championship game of this, so they kind of wanted to come back. I know it’s developmental, but there’s some competitiveness to it,” Devlin said. “They wanted to win this today.” Devlin added that a 7-on-7 win this early into summer preparation gives his kids and coaching staff some confidence. “We’ve been working the last few weeks, so now they know what we can do. They have high expectations themselves,” coach Devlin said. “We have a couple new coaches this year, so it’s not just about the kids. It’s about us learning what we can do as coaches as well.”
