On Friday, the Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Department said that the man was 86 years old. They are not releasing the name of the victim at this time because family is still being notified.
The drowning is not considered suspicious.
Neighbor Odette Galego, who was in the lake with her grandson at the time of the drowning, said the man was swimming with his wife. Galego said she only saw the man’s wife swimming but heard that the man disappeared in the lake.
A separate neighbor made the 911 call.
Galego said it all happened quickly and called the event a devastating shock.
“My son also went with the helpers in the water to retrieve the body,” said Galego. “My son told me firsthand sadly he had passed.”
Galego said emergency crews from Grand Isle and North Hero tried to revive the man twice on shore.
