Hundreds of bicyclists take to the streets of Burlington in costume for Halloween
Drivers on the road in the Queen City Sunday morning had to stop and make way for clowns, superheroes, and other characters on bicycles during Burlington Parks, Recreation and Waterfront’s 13th annual Halloween Ride. “This I think has to be the best weather we’ve ever had in our three-year history. Last year it was super cold and rainy as you may remember,” said Jon Adams-Kollitz, project manager with Burlington Parks, Recreation and Waterfront. The sunny, 60-degree weather paved the way for a perfect drive for participant Aaron Almanza, who traveled from Claremont, New Hampshire just for the event.“Just the community, I’ve been on other rides in Burlington, the Pride Ride last month, I love that this is a biking town I wish my town was a biking town so I’m going to pull some of this back where I am,” said Almanza. With kids getting ready to head out for trick or treating on Monday night, patrol officer Palermo with the Milton Police Department reminds drivers that even though the speed limit in neighborhoods may be marked at 25 mph, it is safest to drive 10 or even 5 miles per hour during the dense hours of trick or treating.“Getting people to slow down. even if the sign says 25, there’s kids out there, they could be wearing a dark costume, they might not necessarily be looking for cars so keep your head on a swivel, always be scanning, if you have to back up or something make sure you’re looking multiple times,” she said. When it comes to candy safety, Palermo recommends parents bring snacks for their kids to munch on while on the hunt for candy so they aren’t digging for the sweets before they are properly checked.“To do candy checks, if you see anything that’s opened or tampered with, definitely take those pieces out and throw them away. Also be wear of allergies, make sure you’re checking that candy for your kids as well to make sure they’re eating what they should be eating,” she said. The Milton Police Department will be out on patrol to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Halloween night.
