
It’s an exciting time for many; college graduation season is here once again. St. Michael’s College and Champlain College will kick off the festivities this weekend. “It’s the best time of the year for everyone,” said Ellen Kane, the vice president for the advancement of communications at St. Mike’s. Excitement is growing on campus as they prepare for the school’s 119th commencement. More than 300 undergraduate and graduate students will be getting their diplomas at the ceremony on Sunday. The celebration of student achievements has been going strong all week. “Just the other day, there was the student award luncheon, which was wonderful. We have students that started our mock trial program. We have students that started our student investment fund,” Kane said. “They all just celebrate each other and they celebrate staff and faculty.”Champlain College celebrates its graduates Saturday at the Champlain Valley Expo.They need the big venue for the more than 3,000 family members, faculty and staff they are expecting to watch the nearly 600 students get their degrees. As this class moves on to the real world, St. Mike’s is looking ahead, recently announcing a new scholarship initiative after receiving an anonymous gift of $1 million. The school will use it to help expand access to higher education while helping families better understand what they’ll be paying. “It’s really to make our education accessible, but also to let parents know around what they’ll pay because it’s basically in their state, their flagship college is what the student will pay,” Kane said. “It just demystifies the whole thing. They can get a wonderful education at our private school and pay what they would pay at their flagship state.”You can expect some traffic this weekend in Essex and Colchester before and after the ceremonies, so plan for that.SUNY Plattsburgh and the University of Vermont hold graduation ceremonies next weekend.
