Three people are dead and more than a dozen first responders had to be quarantined and assessed Wednesday for possible exposure to an unidentified substance after being called to a suspected drug overdose at a rural New Mexico home, authorities said.Four people initially were found unresponsive inside the Mountainair home east of Albuquerque, New Mexico State Police said. He said the health issues people experienced were not related to carbon monoxide or natural gas exposure.Nieto told Hearst sister station KOAT some of the deceased worked in town and were discovered after failing to show up for work.”The reason that they were found was because they didn’t show up to work. The boss called and they didn’t answer, so he ended up sending a couple other workers, and those are the ones that ended up finding them,” Nieto said.New Mexico State Police said there was no threat to the public.“At this time, investigators believe the substance may be transmitted through contact and do not believe it to be airborne,” said Officer Wilson Silver.Nearly two dozen patients were assessed and decontaminated after being exposed to the substance, the University of New Mexico Hospital said.
