It was a multitude of firsts for Vermont Green F.C. on Saturday, May 23. In their women’s soccer team’s inaugural season, the “girls in green” picked up their first win and first home win of the season in a 2-1 victory over the Hudson Valley Crusaders at Virtue Field. “It’s a great start for the green and just expecting such a good season,” said Vermont Green defender Violet Rademacher. “We have such a great group of girls and such a great coaching staff. It’s just starting us on the right foot to have an incredible season.” Vermont Green benefited from a pair of first-half goals from Georgina Clarke and Rademacher, giving themselves a comfortable position for their defense and goalie Blythe Braun to hold the Hudson Valley offense to no goals in the second half of play. “Give it up to the girls with their energy,” said Vermont Green FC women’s soccer head coach Abby Carchio. “We talked about using the 12th woman today, and that’s what they did … we had to move through a couple of bumps, but I’m proud of the girls for collectively doing that together.”Rademacher scored to give the Green the lead back at 2-1 after a free kick pass from Brooke Birtwistle put her right on the net for a diving header score. “Honestly, a diving header has been on my bucket list forever,” Rademacher said. “Putting my body on the line for that, especially for this team, for the fans, for everybody here, it was just an amazing experience.”One of the better parts of Vermont Green’s first home win was getting to celebrate it in front of a sold-out home crowd. The players showed their appreciation for the fans at the end of the contest, thanking them for their cheering and signing as many autographs as they could for all the children who ran onto the field to congratulate the Green postgame. “I can’t even describe how important our supporters are to us,” Carchio said. “Just look at the scenes right now, there’s nothing better, and I think Vermont’s unique in that. I feel so grateful to be in and around this.”Vermont Green will travel on the road to play the New England Mutiny on Tuesday, May 26, in Ludlow, Massachusetts, for their next game.
